Overview

Lassen/Cherry Hill Campground offers a serene escape within the lush, verdant landscapes of the Lassen National Forest. Located just a short drive from the charming town of Chester, California, this site provides a traditional camping experience that prioritizes natural beauty and quietude over modern frills. It serves as an authentic, quiet basecamp for those looking to explore the rugged wilderness where the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges meet.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the scenic banks of Butte Creek, the campground is nestled under a dense canopy of towering pine and fir trees. The high-elevation setting ensures much cooler temperatures during the peak summer months, making it a refreshing retreat from the valley heat. Its strategic location near Chester allows for quick trips to town for supplies while still maintaining a sense of profound wilderness seclusion and peace.

Amenities & Park Features

As a dedicated Forest Service facility, the park focuses on providing the essential features for a comfortable outdoor stay. Each individual site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening gatherings. It is important to note that there are no hookups available, making the park most suitable for self-contained RVs. Common amenities provided at the park include:

  • Well-maintained vault toilets located throughout the loops.
  • Reliable access to potable water via seasonal hand-pumped wells.
  • Spacious, shaded sites designed for primitive camping enthusiasts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the close proximity to Lassen Volcanic National Park, where explorers can witness active boiling mud pots and striking volcanic peaks. For those who enjoy water sports, the expansive Lake Almanor is nearby, offering world-class fishing, kayaking, and boating opportunities. Additionally, several trailheads are accessible from the area, providing miles of hiking through pristine alpine terrain and diverse wildlife habitats.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for self-sufficient travelers who prefer the gentle sounds of the forest over the hum of a crowded commercial resort. It is best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs and adventurers who genuinely enjoy dry camping in a tranquil, shaded environment. If you value privacy, fresh mountain air, and direct access to some of Northern California’s best outdoor recreation, this campground is a premier choice.

Beautiful location in Lassen Forrest. Butte Creek runs along the camp grounds, so it gets VERY COLD at night. It's very pretty to walk the grounds. Well kept. The Forrest service was out every day with chainsaw cutting rounds for each camp site. Bring an 🪓 to make into smaller pieces for yourself. The restrooms are accessible. There are hand ground water pumps, and bring something with a wide mouth to collect water with, like a water pitcher. The campgrounds are sloped, so good luck finding a level area. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this location, but prepare for COLD WEATHER at night, even in the middle of August.

Come out and camp! Best time ever !! I adore this camp ground ! Clean , large and friendly atmosphere! Been here a few times and each time had a blast !!! You can’t beat the price either ! There is no cell service but make that your time to disconnect from every day life ! Well worth it! You can drive 6 miles up the road and get service if needed :)

Beautiful area and great fishing. The kids really enjoyed this area. I would recommend staying overnight if you plan on coming as we felt we needed more time to properly explore the creek. 🎣

This place is an amazing little spot. Right on the creek, beautiful views and hiking. There are some trails or you can just follow the creek. The spots are big and a handful of them are right on the creek. If you bring little kids you may want to get one not on the creek because the bank leading down to the creek is kind of steep in a couple spots and the creek moves fast. Bring cash for the spot, last i saw it was about $24/night and worth it. The road in is easy and doesnt require 4wd.
