Last Mountain Regional Park
Overview
Last Mountain Regional Park offers a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty on the northern shores of Last Mountain Lake. Established as the first federal bird sanctuary in North America in 1887, this park serves as a vital resting point for migratory birds and a peaceful retreat for human visitors. It provides a classic Saskatchewan summer experience where the vast prairie sky meets the shimmering waters of one of the province's most significant lakes, making it a top destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 15 kilometers west of the town of Govan, SK, the park is nestled within a landscape of rolling hills and lakeside vistas. The surrounding area is dominated by the Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area, creating a serene environment far removed from highway noise. The location is characterized by its wide-open spaces and the rhythmic sounds of the marshlands, providing a sense of place that is deeply connected to the natural cycles of the Canadian prairies.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped to handle various camping styles, offering both electric and non-electric campsites suitable for RVs of different sizes. Families often gather at the junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, which serves as a central hub during the warmer months. For those who enjoy sports, the park features a 9-hole golf course with sand greens, along with beach volleyball courts, a playground, and modern washroom facilities to ensure a comfortable stay while remaining close to the wilderness.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Nature enthusiasts will find endless entertainment exploring the nearby bird sanctuary, which hosts over 280 species throughout the year. The lake itself is a major draw for anglers looking to catch walleye, northern pike, and yellow perch from the local docks or boats. Beyond the water, visitors can explore the local history in the nearby town or spend their afternoons hiking the interpretive trails that showcase the unique flora and fauna of this protected prairie ecosystem.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is an ideal match for avid birdwatchers and nature photographers who want front-row access to a world-renowned migratory flyway. It is also a fantastic choice for families seeking a traditional lakeside summer camp atmosphere where children can swim and play in a safe environment. If you prefer quiet evenings under the stars and days filled with low-impact outdoor recreation rather than high-traffic resort amenities, this regional park fits your travel style perfectly.

Great place to camp with your family! Fantastic swimming pool, swimming lessons over 600 kids through last year , 9 hole Golf course, New concession, good menu and "Ice cream!!!!" Boating and fishing. Lots to do. Come and relax😎. The water is not potable, so come prepared. Water available at concession. Enjoy your summer in Saskatchewan.

Last Mountain Lake Regional Park is lovely, clean, and reasonably quiet. The area that shows as unserviced is not a well treed tenting area. Site 119 has a little shelter belt for the tent, but the rest is wide open. Most sites are occupied by glampers and instead of the peaceful sounds of the great outdoors, we heard white noise of the air conditioning units. Many of the sites have solar lights or string lights, so there is no dark night either. The boat launch area is clean and easy to access. Washroom facility for showers is near the lake, in the campground is port o potty - also very clean and stocked with hand sanitizer. There is access to nonpotable water near the near the portopotty. If you are looking for a back to nature tenting experience, keep looking. If you are looking for a lovely paddle on the lake, the water was lovely and the boaters are a nice distance from Bird Island so you can kayak or canoe very safely. For families, there is a pool, a concession, and a lovely beach/swimming area.

We visited the park for Canada Day. The food at the consession was very good. The pool was great. We also visited the bird sanctuary observation tower. The views were incredible. There were fireworks in the evening and they were the best fireworks i have seen in many years. It was a great park and i look forward to visiting again.

You wanna talk long! Yeah like 93km long! Great boating location for summer fun on the wakeboard or tube. Just be wary as it is a wide open lake so any wind can cause white caps. And due to it being more of a southern lake as summer goes along it can get quite green. Though it is also a fun lake for ice fishing in the winter time. Take the hockey sticks and skates and play a little shinny while you wait for the tip ups to trigger!
