Lathrop

Overview

Lathrop State Park holds the distinction of being Colorado's first state park, offering over 1,500 acres of high-desert beauty. Situated at the base of the iconic Spanish Peaks, this destination provides a serene retreat for travelers looking to experience the unique landscape of southern Colorado. The park features two sparkling lakes, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake, which serve as the centerpiece for outdoor recreation and relaxation throughout the seasons.

Location & Surroundings

Located just three miles west of Walsenburg off Highway 160, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet. The environment is characterized by rolling hills, pinon pines, and juniper trees, providing a classic high-plains atmosphere. The most striking feature of the location is the unobstructed view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which create a dramatic backdrop for evening stargazing and morning coffee outside your rig.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers two distinct camping areas, Pinon and Yucca, with over 100 sites designed to accommodate various RV sizes. Many sites include electric hookups and paved pads, while the park provides centralized water and a dump station for convenience. Guests have access to modern restrooms and coin-operated showers. On-site recreational facilities are extensive, including a nine-hole golf course, a swimming beach, and multiple boat ramps for those bringing watercraft.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a primary draw here, with Martin Lake stocked for warm-water fishing and Horseshoe Lake reserved for wakeless boating. For those wanting to explore further, the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway begins nearby, offering a stunning drive through historic mining towns and lush mountain passes. The town of Walsenburg provides local museums and shops, while the rugged beauty of the Great Sand Dunes National Park is accessible for a memorable day trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

Lathrop is an ideal choice for nature-loving families and outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a mix of water-based activities and desert hiking. It is particularly well-suited for RVers who enjoy a quiet, natural atmosphere over a crowded commercial resort. Whether you are a birdwatcher looking for migratory species or a golfer seeking a unique course with mountain views, this park offers a versatile home base for exploring the southern reaches of the state.

Great campground with electric sites. Paid showers with hot water in November were great. We just stayed for one night while traveling through but would definitely go back to stay longer. Nice bird watching and a family of deer paid us a visit.

Lathrop State Park is a great place to spend the night, go for a walk, or have a picnic. You can walk for an hour around the lake on the remarkably smooth sidewalk or go for a much shorter bike ride. Places like this are why I include the state parks pass whenever I renew the registration of my vehicle.

It’s so beautiful here! We live here and come to walk. They have amazing, wide, paved walkways. I stop to often to take pictures! So much for that heart rate!

This is my normal stop when 🧳 ng through Waldenburg. The area is great for stretching your legs and letting the dog walk. The restrooms are the cleanest in the area. You can fill your water bottle and grab an ice cream. Very safe as there is a state patrol office at the welcome center. Highly recommend for families and ladies 🧳 ng solo.
