LBL National Recreation Area/Fenton Campground

Overview

Fenton Campground offers a serene lakeside escape within the vast Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Situated on the Kentucky Lake shoreline, this park is known for its peaceful environment and direct access to water recreation. It provides a more intimate setting compared to larger developed campgrounds, making it a favorite for those who value natural beauty and simplicity. Whether you are passing through on Highway 80 or staying for a week, the park serves as a gateway to the diverse ecosystems of western Kentucky.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is perfectly positioned near Golden Pond, KY, specifically nestled along the western edge of the recreation area. Its location right next to the Eggners Ferry Bridge offers stunning views of the water and easy access from major roads. The surrounding landscape consists of lush hardwood forests and the expansive waters of Kentucky Lake. This scenic waterfront positioning provides a cooling breeze and picturesque sunsets, creating a tranquil backdrop for any RV trip through the region.

Amenities & Park Features

Fenton focuses on essential comforts for the self-contained traveler. Most sites offer electric hookups, though visitors should note there are no individual water or sewer connections at the sites. The facility includes vault toilets and access to a central water filling station. One of the standout features is the on-site boat ramp, which is highly convenient for those bringing watercraft. Each site typically includes a picnic table and fire ring, encouraging outdoor cooking and evening relaxation under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore just minutes away. The Golden Pond Planetarium and Visitor Center provide educational stops, while the nearby Elk & Bison Prairie offers a chance to view native wildlife from your vehicle. For those who enjoy active recreation, the Central Hardwoods Scenic Trail passes close by, offering excellent opportunities for hiking and biking. Fishing is a primary draw here, with Kentucky Lake being world-renowned for its bass and crappie populations.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for anglers and boaters who want to be steps away from the water. It also appeals to back-to-basics RVers who prefer a quiet, natural setting over high-traffic resort amenities. Because of its location near the main road, it is a convenient choice for travelers seeking a nature-focused stopover while traversing Kentucky. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of lapping water and waking up to sunrise over the lake, Fenton is a perfect match.

It’s close to the highway so it’s very easy to get to, but with that comes a considerable amount of traffic noise. At the time of this review, the 110 outlets in site 27 aren’t working. I had my generator so we were able to use that. The sites are kind of close together but the people next to us were cool and said they didn’t mind the generator noise. It’s not far from Aurora or Murray, so if you need or want something it’s only a short drive. I had at least two bars of AT&T service here the whole time. Overall it was a good stay. The lake is nearby and there are plenty of places to hike or bike. I probably would have given five stars but I stayed here for the electricity and the electricity in my site wasn’t working. No big deal.

I rode, gravel ride biking, central hardwood trail. I really like the trail. However, there is large rock in places going up the first mile. From Fenton. Their are piles of fine gravel available to help resurface places needed. I did ride to Golden Pond and back, 15 miles. I've noticed the trail is managed very well over the years. Just needs the fine gravel used in different areas along the whole trail. It's a great trail! Thank you for your work!

the year was 2011 I had vacation days and I had never heard of or been to LBL. I went here to do some astrophotography it was a 6hr drive from home. It was 11pm or so and I was working the scope about 100 yards from my van parked in the first spot of the camp when I was overwhelmed with something watching me. overwhelmed to the point ever hair was standing up on my body. As im walking back to my van I see two red eyes on the hill behind the van just watching me. I jumped in my van as fast as possible and hit the brake lights to light up the hill but couldnt see anything. eventually falling asleep awoken only by my pitbull going absolutely crazy with her hair standing up from something outside. as soon as the sun came up I went out and found a 10-12" long very bizarre footprints. It had been raining the past 3 days so the ground was soft. These prints are unlike anything I had ever seen. So then I went up on the hillside where the red eyes were and seen no sign of anything except a clump of dark grey fur in the bark of tree. about that time a ranger pulls in and I tell him what happened and showed him the fur and the footprint. he didnt say much. he told me I wasnt the first to report something like this. I packed my stuff and left LBL, never been back. this incident kinda slipped my memory a decade ago.

A simple campground with all electric sites. There is a water fill-up station, no dump. Nice hiking trails and close to the lake/bridge. Reception is spotty. It's quiet and very dark at night. Traffic noise in the day. It's self service, just fill out the envelope and pick an open site. $22/night. There is a picnic pavilion too.
