LBL National Recreation Area/Piney Campground
Overview
Piney Campground offers a classic outdoor experience within the sprawling 170,000-acre Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. As the southernmost developed campground in the park, it provides a tranquil, wooded retreat along the scenic shores of Kentucky Lake. It successfully balances the rugged beauty of the Tennessee wilderness with essential modern comforts, making it a staple for regional travelers seeking a deep connection with the great outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Dover, TN, the park is defined by its extensive shoreline access and mature hardwood forests. The campground is organized into several loops, many of which offer direct views of the water or are nestled deep within the shade of the canopy. Its location on the southern tip of the peninsula creates a profound sense of seclusion, where the natural sounds of the lake and local wildlife replace the noise of highway traffic.
Amenities & Park Features
The facility caters to diverse RVing needs with 384 well-spaced sites, including a variety of options ranging from primitive spots to those with full hookups. Travelers appreciate the convenience of the Piney Outpost, a seasonal camp store that stocks essentials, ice, and firewood. Recreational amenities are a major highlight, featuring:
- A dedicated swimming beach and boat ramp for easy lake access.
- A campfire theater designed for educational evening programs.
- An archery range and proximity to several hiking trailheads.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Exploring the surrounding area reveals rich historical sites and diverse educational activities. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the Fort Donelson National Battlefield to immerse themselves in Civil War history. Within the recreation area itself, the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm offers a living history experience. Anglers often spend their days on the water fishing for crappie and bass, while hikers enjoy the rugged terrain of the nearby Fort Henry National Recreation Trail.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts who prioritize natural recreation over high-end resort luxuries. It is an excellent fit for travelers who bring along boats or kayaks, as the lake access is the park's primary draw. If you enjoy rustic natural beauty and a community-focused atmosphere, Piney Campground serves as a perfect basecamp for exploring the unique landscape of western Tennessee.

Big campground in the Land Between the Lakes (LBL). Water access is.close to most sites. Have tent only and lots for campers as well as cabins for rent. Found the golf carts a bit obnoxious but clearly lots love them. They have lots of Halloween decorations a that time of year.

Pro: We had a great site on Chestnut loop with a good lake view and an electric hookup. There was a water spigot a few hundred feet away. Cons: The temperature of the showers in the bath house is not adjustable, and it’s set VERY hot. A toilet in the women’s restroom was stuck on and water ran continuously for the 2 days we were there. The RV next to our site was unattended with a radio left on with the volume loud enough for us to hear in our RV during our entire stay. People wandered through our site and parked carts and bikes on our site while accessing the lake. They never asked permission, spoke or even acknowledged our presence. Piney rents golf carts. It was a constant parade of golf carts throughout the campground at all hours of the day and night. My wife was almost hit by a golf cart while walking and the driver yelled at her to “Get out of the way!”. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing camping experience with courteous campers, Piney Campground is not the place.

This is a large Forest Service Campground on Kentucky Lake. Sites are either right on the lake or have a great view. Sites are dirt and are very unlevel, depending on site. We had to move our small motorhome to the middle of the site. Our neighbor had his trailer tongue literally on the ground to be level. Inexpensive, we had electric, great views, early August had lots of bugs at dusk and dawn. Otherwise, they were pretty non-existent. I did have an email confirmation, but the computer has no record of our reservation. So highly recommend printing a copy of your reservation, just in case. Otherwise, a nice spot to stay. We came on a Sunday evening, looks like weekends are pretty busy.

Camped here on Memorial Day weekend, so I expected a crowd and there was a crowd. As many other people have mentioned there are A LOT of golf carts rolling through. It didn’t bother me but keep it in mind if you’re looking for solitude or whatever. Only stayed one night, so we didn’t get to see much of the campground. Our trip was focused more on the LBL attractions. But based on what I saw, you could hang out in the campgrounds for a few days and make a good trip out of it. The bathroom next to our site was clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our camp neighbors were great. We’ll be camping here again.
