Leavenworth State Fishing Lake

Overview

Leavenworth State Fishing Lake offers a quiet retreat into the natural landscape of northeast Kansas. This 506-acre property, managed by the state, centers around a 175-acre lake known for its clear water and scenic shorelines. It serves as a peaceful alternative to more crowded state parks, providing a back-to-basics atmosphere for travelers who appreciate the sights and sounds of the Great Plains. The lake itself is deep and clear, making it a standout natural feature in the local region for outdoor enthusiasts.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away just a few miles northwest of Tonganoxie, KS, the park is defined by its rolling hills and diverse timber. The lake is surrounded by lush vegetation, offering plenty of shade and a sense of seclusion for every visitor. Its proximity to the Kansas City metro area makes it an accessible getaway, yet the dense trees and quiet waters make it feel a world away from the urban bustle. The landscape is particularly striking during the autumn months when the surrounding timber changes color across the horizon.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping destination, meaning there are no electric or water hookups available for RVs. Travelers should arrive prepared for dry camping with full tanks and charged batteries. The park provides essential facilities to support your stay:

  • The park offers vault toilets located conveniently near the primary camping areas.
  • Visitors can utilize multiple boat ramps and fishing piers for easy water access.
  • Each designated primitive site includes picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings.
The lack of light pollution here also makes it an excellent spot for stargazing directly from your campsite.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the primary draw here, with healthy populations of largemouth bass and channel catfish. The no-wake lake is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, or small fishing boats seeking a glassy surface. Beyond the water, the historic city of Leavenworth is a short drive away, offering tours of Fort Leavenworth and local museums. For those needing a touch of modern convenience, the shopping and dining of Kansas City are within a short 30-minute drive, providing the perfect balance of nature and city access.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers and boondockers who prioritize solitude and nature over luxury amenities. It is a fantastic choice for bird watchers and anglers looking for easy access to the water without the noise of high-speed boat traffic. If you prefer a rustic environment where the primary entertainment is the sunset over the lake rather than a swimming pool or organized activities, this quiet Kansas gem will fit your travel style perfectly. It is a true haven for those who love the outdoor lifestyle.

Great for some quick fishing without all the traffic of the bigger lakes in the area. Good for small boats or kayaks. Been out twice in the last few weeks and always caught something.
