Leo Carrillo
Overview
Leo Carrillo State Park offers a quintessentially Californian coastal experience located just north of Malibu. This state park is famous for its diverse landscape, featuring 1.5 miles of beach dotted with sea caves and tide pools. Unlike the polished resorts found in more urban areas, this park provides a rugged, natural setting where giant sycamore trees shade the canyon campground. It is an ideal spot for those who want to disconnect and enjoy the Pacific breeze in a scenic coastal environment.
Location & Surroundings
Positioned along the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, the park sits where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the ocean. The campground is tucked into a canyon, offering a sense of seclusion despite being near a major thoroughfare. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dramatic coastal bluffs, sandy beaches, and mountainous terrain, providing a striking backdrop for an RV stay in Southern California. The location serves as a gateway to the wilder, less developed side of the Malibu coastline.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground caters to smaller rigs and provides a range of essential features for a comfortable stay. Key amenities include:
- Electrical and water hookups at select sites for 20, 30, and 50 amp service.
- A central dump station and water filling area.
- Coin-operated showers and flush toilets located throughout the camp loops.
- A small camp store for firewood, ice, and basic supplies.
Please note that the park has a maximum RV length of 31 feet. Each site typically includes a fire ring and picnic table, making it easy to enjoy outdoor meals.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors spend their days exploring the famed sea caves and searching for marine life in the tide pools. The area is a popular destination for surfing, swimming, and beachcombing. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the extensive trail network in the Santa Monica Mountains is accessible directly from the park, offering panoramic ocean views. Film buffs may also recognize the beach as a frequent filming location for numerous Hollywood movies and television shows.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and families who prioritize natural beauty over luxury resort amenities. Because of the size restrictions, it is best suited for mid-sized RVs and campervans. Travelers looking for a peaceful retreat with direct beach access and a chance to experience the wilder side of Malibu will find this park to be a perfect match for their travel style.

Just finished up our second camping trip and debating if I should tell you how amazing this place is. About three years ago I took my daughters camping here and we had the best time. There was a heat spell but you can’t complain about the weather when you’re camping. I’m not gonna tell you what our site number wise because there are very good sites at this campground. Ask for cleanliness, my experience has been at this campground is always kept very clean. Even this morning I saw many people cleaning the restrooms. As for noise level. I only heard one campsite not observing the quiet hours at this camp. What is really great about this place is your proximity to the beach. From our campsite it took us about five minutes to get down to the beach. It’s great because we can go down to the beach and enjoy it in the morning. Then we can come back to our camp and have lunch. Then we can go back to the beach and enjoy it in the afternoon. Then we can come back to our campsite and enjoy it there. We found that most of the people who camp here are very kind and respectful. I also want to let you know that there’s a general store at this location so in case you forgot something you can grab it. My son also wants me to tell you that someone caught an octopus in the tide pools. He loved it

Great camping walking distance from the beach. Store in the campground was convenient. The only downside was heavy truck traffic on north side of the camp and no RECYCLE!!! I really think it's time all campgrounds have recycle bins...we can do better at this com'on ♻️🤷🏻♀️

My family has been camping here for family reunions every year for years! We love it! The campgrounds and beaches are beautiful. My only complaint is the showers. This year I had to use countless shower tokens just trying to find a shower that worked. Also it takes about a whole token just for the water to get hot. Hopefully this gets fixed.

Great campground, beautiful spot with trees for shade. The beach is so lovely. Amenities are pretty clean. There is only service near the front of the campground so get a spot up there if you need to use your phone. Hike and bike in spots are super secluded from the bustle of the main campground. Please see attached photo for restrictions now in place for this spot though. And a heads up that hike and bike in are $10 per person. Bring your own firewood as it’s expensive at the store!
