Leonard Harrison

Overview

Leonard Harrison State Park is famously known as the home of the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. Situated on the East Rim of the Pine Creek Gorge, this park offers some of the most breathtaking views in the Commonwealth. It serves as a gateway to the vast Tioga State Forest, providing a quiet, natural retreat for travelers. The park covers several hundred acres and is dedicated to preserving the rugged beauty of this deep glacial canyon.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 10 miles west of Wellsboro, PA, the park feels worlds away from the hustle of city life. The surroundings are defined by high plateaus and the deep, winding waters of Pine Creek far below. Travelers will navigate winding mountain roads to reach the park, which is nestled within a dense hardwood forest. This location offers a true sense of seclusion, where the sounds of nature replace highway noise.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping area at Leonard Harrison is best described as rustic yet comfortable for RVers. Most sites feature electric hookups, though water and sewer are not available at individual pedestals. The park provides a central dump station and potable water fill-up points for convenience. Common features include:

  • Modern restrooms and warm showers
  • Picnic tables and fire rings at each site
  • Visitor center with historical exhibits

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the Turkey Path, a steep trail that descends to the floor of the gorge, passing several waterfalls along the way. For those who prefer a gentler pace, the Overlook Trail provides panoramic views of the canyon. Just a short drive away, the town of Wellsboro delights visitors with its Victorian architecture and gas-lit streets. Additionally, the Pine Creek Rail Trail offers miles of flat terrain for biking and hiking along the canyon floor.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers who value scenery over resort-style amenities. Because the sites are somewhat wooded and vary in size, it is most suitable for small-to-mid-sized RVs and camper vans. Travelers looking for a quiet nature escape will appreciate the lack of commercial distractions. It is the perfect destination for those wanting to wake up just steps away from one of the most iconic natural landmarks in the state.

One of our favorite spots in Northern Pennsylvania. This Tioga county grand Vista is absolutely amazing. As you look over the thousands of acres of State Park and watch the leaves blow up following the canyon draft, it’s absolutely amazing. with facilities for every need, lots of hiking trails, a visitor center with excellent bathrooms. This is one of our favorite places.

Beautiful park to really take in all the views of the canyon. There’s a really nice observation deck that gradually lowers into other deck areas so you can get a full view at all different angles.

Best park I've been to in PA! The views are amazing, the hike is challenging but very fun and the campground was super clean. This is a wonderful place that everyone who enjoys the outdoors should visit!

Did a short day trip here from our camp site and had a fun time. They have different level trail and amazing views to be had. Definitely something that can be done with the family or by yourself.

This is a free park so I can't be too upset with some of the changes they made. However the parking lot changes where they chop down all of the trees around the parking lot and change the layout of the parking lot and move all the parking a little bit further away from the park was in my honest opinion a poor decision. I don't know if there's new management there or what, but even the gift shop seems lesser and I'm not sure if there's even possible to get any kind of drinks or snacks up there. Every time I go I can't get anything to drink from like a booth. There used to be a wonderful food truck here that sold Maple related products and maple syrups, however the management here decided they did not want to renew the contract so that's not even an option anymore and to me that was kind of like one of the little highlights of this park. A couple years ago this park was absolutely amazing wonderful and perfect but now I feel like something else has changed, whether it be new management or a change in the times but this isn't what it used to be. There are some great well-maintained trails here especially the turkey trail and the overlook trail is pretty good as well. I feel like they need to cut back some of the trees that are up near the viewing platform so you can see more of the surrounding area.
