Lewis and Clark State Park in Onawa, Iowa, offers a unique blend of American history and lakeside relaxation. This park serves as a tribute to the 1804 expedition, inviting travelers to camp on the shores where explorers once tread. Visitors often appreciate the full-scale keelboat replica, which provides a tangible connection to the past through its impressive craftsmanship. It is a quiet destination that prioritizes natural beauty and historical education over high-traffic resort frills, making it a peaceful stop for any traveler.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the shores of Blue Lake, an oxbow lake formed by the Missouri River, the park sits just west of Onawa. The surrounding landscape is characterized by lush cottonwood trees and expansive prairie views that represent the heart of the Midwest. You can see past reviews pictures when the park was well maintained, not anymore. There's no beach anymore it's covered in weeds. Docks are overgrown with weeds also. Bathrooms are ok. It's a shame they let this nice park go downhill 😒

3.5 stars. Has potential to be more, but the lake isn't the draw it should be. The beach is totally grown over, so it's not surprising that it was on the no swim list. A few hiking trails, but we only took one and it was fine. Campsites are spacious, bathroom clean-cleaner when the 2nd host showed up. The learning center was pretty neat, especially where the boats are.

Lots of trails to walk. The lake was very low. Campground was full but seemed peaceful.

Keel boat was on trailer and covered so unable to see. Found a smaller version made by the same boat builder at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Soiux City. Park was nice with a bit more space (about 40 ft wide) compared to many camping sites. Unfortunately, water would not be turned on until May 1st. Did have electric and sewer hookups. Nice sunrise views over lake.

Nice campground, well kept, hiking trails, nice space between rvs. We stayed in lot 77. The lake was low cuz of the 3 year drought. Nice nature center. We went into onawa and went to retro movie theatre and watch twister.
