Lewis & Clark

Overview

Lewis & Clark State Park sits on the picturesque north shore of Lake Sakakawea, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the United States. Named after the famous explorers who documented this region over two centuries ago, the park offers a rugged yet comfortable outdoor experience for modern travelers. It serves as a premier destination for those looking to explore the vast North Dakota landscape while enjoying modern camping conveniences and well-maintained facilities designed for adventure and relaxation.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 19 miles southeast of Williston near the quiet town of Epping, the park is defined by its stunning proximity to Lake Sakakawea. The surrounding terrain features the rolling hills and unique geological formations typical of the upper Missouri River basin. Visitors are often treated to sweeping views of the deep blue water and the dramatic, wind-swept shoreline that provides a sense of isolation and tranquility rarely found in more urbanized camping areas.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a variety of options ranging from primitive sites to those with modern electrical and water hookups. Guests have access to several key features during their stay to ensure comfort and convenience:

  • A full-service marina with a boat ramp, fuel, and seasonal slips.
  • Convenient shower houses and modern restroom facilities.
  • A designated swimming beach and playground for families.

These well-maintained amenities ensure a comfortable stay for big-rig RVers and tent campers alike who value accessibility and cleanliness while traveling through the Great Plains.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the main draw here, with world-class fishing for walleye and northern pike available just steps from the campsites. For history buffs, the nearby Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site offers an immersive look at the 19th-century fur trade era. On-site, several miles of scenic multi-use trails invite hikers and mountain bikers to explore the prairie vistas and rugged shorelines that define this unique North Dakota state park.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for boating enthusiasts and dedicated anglers who want direct, easy access to the water. It also appeals to families and solo travelers seeking a safe, scenic environment for swimming at the beach or birdwatching. If you prefer a peaceful, nature-focused retreat over a high-traffic commercial resort, the expansive North Dakota skies and quiet nights of Epping will make this a standout stop on your itinerary.

Pretty cool place. Not too busy, lots of trails, lots of wildlife, and clean restrooms. Oh, and awesome rocks along the river too.

Beautiful view of the Missouri River and easy flat walking path from campsite to access it. Clean campsites, firewood for sale, nice ranger and camp host both talked to us and we're helpful. Highly recommend.

Great spot in North Dakota to experience Missouri River. Beach access gives you opportunity to look through all the variety of stones. Sunrise is spectacular. Tent camping area is spacious, very well maintained and have awesome lake view. Beach has plenty of firewood if you like to pick your own. Didn’t see many animals besides bunnies and some fish in the lake. But all the wild flowers are so pretty. Also surprised they have a car wash station near the RV camping area. Definitely worth a weekend trip if you also want to stop by Williston for a good meal after rustic camping experience!

A fantastic state park year-round! My kids love camping and Geocaching during the summer months. Especially when we're able to be there for events like "Christmas in July". We also enjoy the sledding hill in the winter. The views are always beautiful and the park staff and hosts are very friendly.
