Lewis & Clark/Logging Creek
Overview
Tucked away in the dense evergreen canopy of the Lewis and Clark National Forest, Logging Creek Campground offers a quintessential Montana wilderness experience. This quiet destination provides a secluded escape for those looking to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in the backcountry. Located near the small community of Monarch, the park sits alongside a gentle stream, offering a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of nature replace the hum of city life. It is an ideal spot for travelers seeking authentic forest camping in a pristine, undeveloped mountain setting.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the heart of the Little Belt Mountains, the campground is accessible via the stunning Kings Hill Scenic Byway. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dramatic limestone cliffs, rolling hills, and thick stands of lodgepole pine. At an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, visitors can enjoy cooler summer temperatures and crisp mountain air throughout the season. The park serves as a gateway to the Belt Creek Canyon, a region renowned for its unique geology and rugged Montana beauty.
Amenities & Park Features
Logging Creek is a primitive facility designed for self-contained travelers who appreciate a rustic lifestyle. The park features vault toilets and a seasonal hand pump for potable water. Each individual site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening campfires under the stars. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups, the generous site spacing ensures plenty of privacy and a sense of solitude. Because the access roads are gravel, the park is best suited for small to medium-sized RVs and camper vans.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreation nearby, including world-class trout fishing on both Logging Creek and the nearby Belt Creek. A short drive away, Sluice Boxes State Park offers stunning hiking trails that wind through steep limestone canyons and historic mining remnants. For those interested in local culture, the nearby town of Monarch provides a glimpse into Montana’s mining history. Many visitors also use the park as a basecamp for wildlife viewing, as elk, deer, and diverse bird species are common in the area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is perfect for off-grid enthusiasts who value solitude and natural scenery over modern resort conveniences. It is ideal for van lifers and small trailer owners who enjoy dry camping and want to escape the crowded commercial parks. If you are looking for a tranquil mountain retreat that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the great outdoors, Logging Creek provides the perfect backdrop for a rugged and memorable Montana road trip experience.

Awesome place....slice of Heaven!

Full on weekends, but great base camp location. Creek close enough to hear, nice trails through campground. All dirt, no pavement.

Love this place. It's the perfect place to camp.

Nice and remote, full site over Memorial Day weekend. Nearby forest service roads are popular for ATV+. Sites for all sizes of groups. Wildlife frequent the site, don't leave food out. Take Evans-Riceville Road in, Logging Creek road is much more treacherous.
