Lily Bay
Overview
Lily Bay State Park offers a quintessentially Maine experience on the eastern shore of Moosehead Lake. Established in 1961, this park is celebrated for its vast wilderness and deep blue waters. It provides a peaceful retreat for RVers who appreciate dry camping in a pristine natural setting. Spanning over 900 acres, the park offers a mix of dense forest and shoreline views that capture the rugged beauty of the North Woods.
Location & Surroundings
Located just nine miles north of Greenville, the park sits within the Moosehead Lake Region, an area famous for its dramatic landscapes and outdoor recreation. The surrounding environment is characterized by towering evergreens and the expansive lake, which is the largest mountain lake in the eastern United States. This remote location offers visitors a chance to escape the noise of more developed tourist corridors.
Amenities & Park Features
While the park does not offer electrical or water hookups, it provides essential facilities for self-contained RVs. There are two modern boat launches available for those looking to explore the water, along with a designated swimming beach and a playground. Each campsite includes a private fire ring and picnic table, and the park maintains clean comfort stations with hot showers. A convenient dump station is located near the park entrance for RV travelers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is Moosehead Lake, where visitors enjoy boating, fishing, and kayaking. Hikers often frequent the two-mile Shore Trail, which offers scenic overlooks of the water. For a day trip, the town of Greenville provides local shops and dining, or you can take a boat shuttle to Mount Kineo State Park to hike the iconic cliffs. Wildlife viewing is a top priority here, with frequent sightings of moose and loons.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and RVers who prefer a rustic, quiet environment over a resort-style experience. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to disconnect and enjoy outdoor activities like swimming and stargazing in dark skies. Because there are no hookups, it is best suited for those with solar power or large holding tanks who value privacy and large, wooded sites that provide a true sense of seclusion in the Maine wilderness.

One of my favorite locations to tent, the check in is fast and easy. The park ranger, and the maintenance team is on top of the game. The park is clean at all times. Outhouses are available at every camping site and always clean and stocked. There is also a comfort station where you can clean your dishes and take a shower, ea shower is accessable for wheelchair users. There are also two boat launching areas, a kids playground, volleyball, basketball area and a public small beach.

Lily Bay State Park has held a special place in our hearts for nearly 45 years. It’s where countless family memories have been made — from early morning swims and lazy afternoons by the lake, to quiet evenings under the stars. The lakefront campsites are absolutely beautiful, offering the perfect backdrop for peaceful, sun-filled days. The campground is always clean and well cared for. It’s more than just a campground — it’s part of our family story. See you next year, Lily Bay!

My wife and I drove from Brunswick to Lily Bay State Park on the strength of many positive reviews. We now realize that the bulk of the positive reviews are written by people who are fortunate enough to camp in this beautiful site. It is, unfortunately, less than ideal for day visitors. The public beach is small with a limited number of picnic tables and grills. On the day we visited (mid-July 2025), it was mild and clear, but so windy that a cookout was really out of the question. It was also abundantly clear that a lot of geese had spent time in and around the beach. It is unquestionably a beautiful location (although what's with the dog statue?), but best suited for people who have campers and other support equipment.

No matter what time of year our state Park is absolutely beautiful. I enjoy kayaking, hiking and cross country skiing here. The camping sites are spacious with views of Moosehead Lake. Everything is pristine and family friendly.
