Lincoln/South Fork Campground
Overview
Lincoln/South Fork Campground offers a peaceful retreat into the high-altitude beauty of the Lincoln National Forest near Ruidoso. Situated at an elevation of approximately 7,500 feet, this campground provides a cool respite from the heat, surrounded by towering ponderosa pines and fir trees. It is a traditional forest service site that emphasizes a connection with nature over modern luxuries, making it a favorite for those who value quiet evenings under the stars.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a short drive from the bustling mountain town of Ruidoso, the campground sits near the South Fork Bonito Creek. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rugged mountain terrain and lush forest floors. Visitors will find themselves at the doorstep of the White Mountain Wilderness, where the air is crisp and the scenery remains largely untouched, offering a true backcountry atmosphere within reach of local amenities.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive forest destination, this park is designed for dry camping enthusiasts. Travelers should be prepared for a rustic experience, as the site does not offer electricity, water, or sewer hookups. Available facilities include:
- Standard vault toilets maintained by the Forest Service.
- Individual campsites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings.
- Access to seasonal potable water, though visitors are encouraged to carry their own.
The layout is best suited for tents, van lifers, and smaller RVs, as the access roads and sites can be narrow.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this area. The South Fork Trail is easily accessible from the campground, providing miles of hiking through diverse forest ecosystems. Anglers and photographers often visit the nearby Bonito Creek area for its scenic vistas. For a change of pace, the shops and restaurants of downtown Ruidoso are less than twenty miles away, offering a perfect day trip for supplies or local culture.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for the self-sufficient traveler who enjoys a minimalist approach to RVing. If you prefer the sound of wind through the pines over the hum of an air conditioner, you will feel right at home. It is particularly well-suited for nature photographers and hikers who want to stay close to the trailheads. Those with large motorhomes should exercise caution, as this park favors smaller footprints and a quiet, respectful camping style.

We were there a year ago on 6/20/23. We got a great spot by a restroom. It was nice and not too busy. There were quite a few rangers there, counting owls, I think. I wonder if it was just destroyed.

Beautiful campground and clean restrooms. However, HORRIBLE experience had a crew of 20 plus show up with over 6 cars stacked into one campsite around 9pm and partied ALL night long. They were rude and obnoxious and started the music around 2am. Been camping all my life and never experienced something so infuriating. The families had young children yet stayed up most of the night disturbing almost the entire campground. Quiet time needs to be enforced 10pm-6am. Hopefully this was and will be an isolated event. Hope your camping trip meets all your expectations and remember go camping to get out of the city and enjoy nature! And be respectful of others!!!!!! :)

We had a wonderful time camping here! Huge sites so you aren't on top of your neighbors. Awesome views of the mountains all around, we had deer come right up to the site, could hear coyotes and bull elk! Great, clean, restrooms with flush toilets and crystal clear drinking water throughout the park. I can't wait to go back!

Awesome place to camp! Very clean. You have Bonito lake close to the camp and you also have 2 streams that flow by the campsite. Kids love streams. Extremely clean bathrooms. Definitely will be returning. Person in charge of area is very friendly.
