Little Elbow Campground

Overview

Little Elbow Campground offers a serene escape deep within the Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park. As a premier destination in Alberta's Kananaskis Country, this campground serves as a gateway to some of the most stunning landscapes in the Canadian Rockies. Unlike developed resorts, this park provides a rugged, back-to-nature experience where the sound of the wind through sub-alpine trees replaces the noise of city life. It is an ideal basecamp for those looking to explore the vast network of trails that crisscross this protected wilderness area.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 30 kilometers west of the charming hamlet of Bragg Creek, the campground is situated at the end of Highway 66. The surroundings are defined by the majestic Elbow River and the looming peaks of the Front Range. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a landscape of lodgepole pines and wildflower meadows. The proximity to the river provides not only beautiful views but also a sense of isolation that is rare so close to a major metropolitan area like Calgary.

Amenities & Park Features

As a provincial park facility, Little Elbow focuses on simplicity. The park features over 130 unserviced campsites, meaning RVers should arrive with full water tanks and plenty of power. On-site facilities include pit toilets, picnic tables, and heavy-duty fire pits for evening gatherings. There is a hand pump for water, though it is often recommended to bring your own potable supply. Firewood is typically available for purchase, allowing guests to enjoy a traditional camping atmosphere under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Just a short distance away is Forgetmenot Pond, a crystal-clear body of water perfect for picnicking and easy strolls. For those seeking a challenge, the trailhead for Nihahi Ridge offers a strenuous hike with rewarding panoramic views. Mountain bikers frequently utilize the Little Elbow Trail for long-distance rides. Additionally, a short drive back down the highway leads to the powerful cascades of Elbow Falls, a must-see natural landmark.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for self-contained RVers who value scenery and outdoor recreation over modern luxuries like Wi-Fi or full hookups. It is a favorite for hikers and equestrians who want direct access to the backcountry. If your travel style involves disconnecting from digital distractions and spending your days on the trails or by the river, Little Elbow provides the perfect rustic setting for your Alberta adventure.

Little Elbow Campground is one of the best base camp spots in Kananaskis if you want to explore the surrounding mountains. The sites are well-spaced with firepits and picnic tables, and the Elbow River runs right by the campground, which makes it a really peaceful setting. There are pit toilets, water pumps, and plenty of room for both tents and RVs, though no hookups. What makes this place special is its location. From here you can start several great day hikes without driving far — including Remus, Romulus, Mount Glasgow, Tombstone Pass, and the Big Elbow / Little Elbow loop. It’s perfect if you want to set up camp for a few nights and use it as a jumping-off point for exploring different valleys and ridges each day. A solid choice if you’re looking for a quiet spot with direct access to some of the best hiking in the area.

We loved staying at Little Elbow Campground. The environment is amazing, with awesome hiking opportunities. Linda, the campground manager was really friendly and professional. She helped me choose a hiking trail that would be suitable for my family. She even found my phone! We can’t recommend little Elbow campground any higher. We loved our stay there.

We initially booked a double site in the equestrian area, not expecting anyone to camp right beside us. To our surprise, several last-minute bookings came in, and we found ourselves in a bit of a pinch after moving our trailer to the neighboring site. Thankfully, the operator was very accommodating and presented us with several options. In the end, we were given a site that worked out perfectly for our family and friends. We’ve been coming here for five years now, and it never disappoints. The views are stunning, the atmosphere is quiet and peaceful, and it’s an excellent spot for families. The campground is close to both hiking and mountain biking trails, and just a short drive from Bragg Creek town. The staff this season have been outstanding—special thanks to Linda for her amazing customer service. The sites are always clean, well-kept, and clearly cared for. This place is truly a gem and won’t disappoint, especially for families looking for a great outdoor experience. Well done to the team here—we’ll be back again this season and for decades to come! Thank-You Jetson, Jennah and Jesse

A nice campground right by a popular hiking spot! Camping here is a must if you want to shave off a few km from the Nihahi Ridge hike! It’s a great location for campers and tenters alike, and deer like to explore the campgrounds. I recommend looking at the campground map ahead of time to find where your nearest washroom is, as there’s no service out there and there’s nothing worse than going the wrong way when you have to use the toilet. Rangers patrol often enough and you can either buy firewood or bring your own (as long as there’s no ban, check in advance).
