Little Fish Lake
Overview
Little Fish Lake Provincial Park offers a quiet escape within the rolling prairie landscapes of southeastern Alberta. Located a short drive from the bustling tourist hubs of the Badlands, this park provides a stark contrast with its wide-open horizons and peaceful atmosphere. It is managed as a primitive camping destination, where the focus remains on the natural environment rather than modern luxuries. Travelers visiting this area will find a sense of solitude that is increasingly rare in more developed provincial parks.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 43 kilometers southeast of Drumheller, the park sits on the edge of a shallow, terminal lake surrounded by native prairie grasslands. The drive to the park takes you away from the dramatic coulees and hoodoos into a landscape defined by expansive views and big Alberta skies. Because the lake level fluctuates significantly with the seasons, the shoreline provides a unique, ever-changing backdrop of salt-encrusted flats and hardy vegetation that defines the regional ecosystem.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional dry-camping experience, meaning there are no power or water hookups available at any of the campsites. The park provides essential features for a comfortable stay:
- Spacious back-in sites for various rig lengths.
- Individual fire pits and sturdy picnic tables.
- Common areas featuring pit toilets and a hand pump.
RVers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks, as there is no sani-dump on the premises. The lack of modern infrastructure ensures a quiet, low-traffic environment for all visitors.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The park is a renowned haven for bird watching, as it is part of a recognized important bird area frequented by diverse shorebirds and migratory species. Visitors often spend their days with binoculars in hand or take a short drive to explore the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the historic sites of Drumheller. When the sun sets, the lack of light pollution makes this an exceptional location for stargazing, offering unobstructed views of the Milky Way that are difficult to find elsewhere.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize peace and quiet over resort-style amenities. It appeals specifically to those who enjoy dry camping and want to experience the raw beauty of the Alberta prairies without the heavy crowds found in the main Drumheller valley. If you are a photographer, a dedicated nature lover, or someone looking for a meditative stopover on a long road trip, this rustic park provides the perfect setting for a quiet night.

The lake is shallow and with a little algae, but it was so nice to swim and walk around there. The camping site is decorated by the local community to create a cozy atmosphere. There is a nice playground for children. The whole area is ennobled by residents who own a combo by the lake

Very beautiful little campground. The lake is nasty as heck, but if you're just looking for a quiet place to camp and hang out, it's nice

Although a little bit out-of-the-way, this is an amazing spot to come camping, the campground was amazingly clean, well-kept, and very quiet, even on the long weekend, I would highly recommend this for anyone that likes camping in a nice spot , limited cell service

It depends what you are looking for...this could be heaven for those who want quiet, simple and out of the way spot. It is the simplest provincial park I have ever been to. It has a small- maybe 5 campsites? A handful of picnic tables and a swing set with 2 swings. Outhouses on site, I suspect they had running water with size but not positive. There was a water pump on site. There is a lake that would be fun with a small boat. I did see a primitive boat launch area. Small "beach" area with small, nearly sand pebbles. If you want a park with more amenities or just more, this is not for you. It was a fun find for us on a warm & windy day but I would only go back if it was a need to be in a rustic and primitive place.
