Little Pond

Overview

Little Pond Campground is a hidden gem tucked within the western edge of the Catskill Forest Preserve. Centered around a pristine 13-acre glacial pond, this state-managed facility offers a tranquil escape from the hustle of modern life. Unlike bustling commercial resorts, this park emphasizes a deep connection with nature, providing a quiet backdrop where the sounds of the forest take center stage. The atmosphere is decidedly laid-back, encouraging guests to slow down and enjoy the natural rhythms of the mountains.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the scenic town of Andes, NY, the park is surrounded by rolling mountains and lush hardwood forests typical of the Delaware County highlands. The drive to the campground involves navigating winding mountain roads that offer breathtaking vistas at every turn. Because it is located deep within the forest preserve, visitors are treated to exceptionally dark skies, making it a premier destination for stargazing and observing local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park offers a rustic experience, it provides essential comforts for RV travelers seeking a traditional camping environment. It is important to note that there are no electric hookups available, making this a true dry camping destination. However, the park supports self-contained travel with several key features:

  • A guarded swimming beach and designated picnic areas for daytime relaxation.
  • Rowboat, canoe, and kayak rentals for exploring the calm waters of the pond.
  • A central trailer dump station and convenient potable water access points.
  • Modern restrooms equipped with hot showers and flush toilets.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities just steps from their campsites. The Little Pond Loop Trail offers a gentle hike around the water, while the more adventurous can connect to the Touchmenot Trail leading to the Balsam Lake Mountain Fire Tower for panoramic views. For a change of pace, the nearby Village of Andes offers charming antique shops and local eateries, while the Pepacton Reservoir provides world-class fishing opportunities for brown trout.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for RVers who prioritize peace and privacy over resort-style amenities like Wi-Fi or cable TV. It is a perfect fit for those with smaller to mid-sized rigs who are comfortable with boondocking and want to immerse themselves in the wilderness. If your travel style involves hiking, paddling, and sitting by a campfire under a canopy of stars, Little Pond will feel like your own private sanctuary in the Catskills.

Nice quiet campground. If you are lucky enough to get a site on the pond, they are large and private. Rangers keep the place calm and family friendly. If you're looking to have a rowdy party, camp elsewhere We appreciated Ranger Jason making himself visible. Gave us good hike recommendations.

I have been camping at Little Pond Campground for the past couple of years, usually in the fall, and it has become one of my favorite spots. The grounds are very nice, well organized, and surrounded by beautiful scenery that makes every visit feel peaceful and refreshing. The campsites are well maintained, and the overall atmosphere is relaxing and family friendly. The only area that could use some improvement is the bathrooms, but it does not take away from the overall experience. We truly love coming here and plan to keep returning.

Nice clean campground, beautiful scenery and local area. Not Dog Friendly! "No Dogs" signs everywhere. They have alot of rules here. No this, No that. We weren't hassled by the rules but we were warned about them often. The road coming up to the area is very steep for an RV, and the campground road is steeper. The speed limit is 15 mph before you get close to the campground. That's way too slow to climb the steep hill and you are warned verbally, and with signage, that the speed limit is enforced by radar. There is only one trash deposit (2 dumpsters side by side) in the entire campground, no trash cans. The garbage truck came at 6am to make a tremedous racket dumping them. We had a nice stay, but be aware that the constant affront from campground rules is stifling.

My wife and I discovered this place last year and fell in love with it. I brought my 3 kids this past week and it was amazing. The place is pristine, water is clean and the camping is peaceful. The park rangers are super helpful and friendly. I can’t wait to come back again and spend more time. There is no cell service so it’s the perfect place to disconnect. FYI there are bears nearby, we didn’t see or encounter any but did see fresh bear prints on our walk less than 1/2 mile fr our campsite.

What a great experience! Check in and check out was so easy. The grounds are well maintained and bathrooms are fairly clean. I loved staying next to the little playground with only a short walk to a serene lake. Water was clear and kids found plenty of tadpoles to play with. Very positive experience!
