Situated just north of Seeley Lake, Montana, this park provides a classic forest service experience where the focus remains entirely on the natural landscape. Visitors are greeted by clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a standout destination for those touring the scenic Seeley-Swan Valley and looking for a quiet retreat.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled along the eastern shore of Lake Alva, surrounded by a dense canopy of western larch and Douglas fir. Its location on Montana Highway 83 provides easy access while maintaining a sense of mountain seclusion. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling hills and glacial lakes, offering a ruggedly beautiful backdrop for every campsite. This area is particularly famous for its vibrant fall colors and the cool, crisp air that flows through the Clearwater River basin.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the park prioritizes simplicity and a rustic atmosphere. It features a concrete boat launch and a dedicated swimming beach, perfect for enjoying the pristine water. While there are no utility hookups available, the park provides essential comforts including vault toilets, potable water from hand pumps, and sturdy picnic tables and fire rings at each site. Many sites are designed to accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, though the park is best known for its primitive, quiet charm.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Clearwater River Canoe Trail located just a short drive south. Fishing is a primary draw at Lake Alva, with excellent opportunities to catch yellow perch and northern pike. Nature lovers should keep an eye out for the resident loon population, as the lake is a known nesting site for these iconic birds. The nearby town of Seeley Lake offers local dining, supplies, and access to more extensive backcountry hiking trails.

Beautiful campground. Lots of trees for shade everything was very green. Some of the camp spots were a challenge to back into. We had a 29’ trailer do the spot we reserved was a challenge. Picnic tables and camp area were clean. Short walk down to the lake. The beach was nice for little kids it was shallow for a ways out and they could play.

We had a great time here. The lake was beautiful and it was amazing getting a spot here. Camp hosts were great. Wish there was more beach area for the lake. Only thing stopping 5 stars.

Lake Alva Campground has a day use recreation area on this quiet no-wake lake, featuring a swimming beach, picnic tables, and a boat ramp. Accessibility info and site description: From Hwy 83 ten miles north of Seeley Lake, turn west at the signs for Lake Alva campground, then turn left at the fork. There are four parking areas that make up one large parking lot, and no disabled parking. The accessible restroom can be found at the center of the one way loop near the boat ramp. One picnic site is located on the far side of this loop, and the other is at the second parking area on the right. The path to the swimming beach is at the corner of the first parking area on the left, marked with a sign. There's a short paved path, followed by a step down onto a graveled trail that leads downhill to a somewhat grassy spot with a sign that says "no lifeguard". This is the designated swimming site, but note that there is no true "beach" here. The distance from the parking lot to the swimming beach is about 100 feet. Lake Alva's best feature is that it's a no-wake lake, which means it will be more peaceful than other lakes nearby. This is a great spot for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, fishing, or even floating on an inner tube. The swimming beach leaves much to be desired, as there is no actual beach, and the small grassy area won't fit many people. However, it sounds like this spot might also be less busy than other nearby sites, so it may provide an opportunity to recreate on the water without the crowds!
