Lomond River Lodge and RV Park

Overview

Lomond River Lodge and RV Park serves as a tranquil base for travelers exploring the rugged beauty of Newfoundland’s west coast. Situated along the banks of a famed salmon river, this destination offers a balanced mix of rustic charm and essential comforts. It provides a peaceful atmosphere where the sound of flowing water replaces the noise of the highway, making it a prime basecamp for those entering the Gros Morne region to experience the island’s wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Birchy Head, the park sits at the southern entrance of Gros Morne National Park. The surrounding landscape is defined by ancient forests, dramatic mountain silhouettes, and the winding path of the Lomond River itself. Its strategic position offers seamless access to the Viking Trail, allowing guests to transition quickly from the main highway to a secluded, riverside sanctuary where the local wildlife often makes an appearance near the water’s edge.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides various serviced RV sites featuring electrical hookups, alongside unserviced areas for those seeking a traditional camping experience. Guests have access to essential facilities including clean washrooms and hot showers to refresh after a day of exploration. A standout feature is the on-site fly fishing opportunities, as the river is a known corridor for Atlantic salmon. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring for cozy evening gatherings under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A short drive leads visitors to the world-renowned Tablelands, a rare geological site where the earth's mantle is exposed. The Discovery Centre in nearby Woody Point provides fascinating context on the park’s UNESCO World Heritage status. Travelers can also embark on the Green Gardens Trail or explore the volcanic cliffs of Trout River. For a change of pace, the local community offers unique dining experiences and local music that capture the true spirit of the island.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers who prioritize direct access to the outdoors over high-end resort luxuries. It is a perfect match for independent RVers looking for a quiet alternative to the more crowded national park campgrounds. Anglers will find the location unbeatable for its river proximity, while photographers will appreciate the soft morning mist over the water. It caters to those who value a peaceful retreat amidst Newfoundland’s wild landscapes.

Had an amazing stay! We stayed during our ATV trip across the island. Doris was very accommodating and even offered her own vehicle for us to get gas or visit the park. Pam made us dinner. We had bacon cheeseburgers, moose burgers, poutine, and onion rings. It was delicious and very well priced! The cabin we rented was very clean and well kept. It was very cozy and spacious and had all the amenities we needed. We had a great stay and will definitely be back

Lots of local folks with campers as well as tourists. River close by to fish in , license may be bought on site . Just watched fireworks here and they are having karaoke tonight in the lounge . Cabins to rent or rooms when available , we're in a room .

Room 2, inside the reception and take away building: 24 hours noise from the fridge motor of the take away shop, earplugs do help. Mattress had seen better times. Not good value for money

Nice tidy park, cabins are a little dated but lacking nothing and are very clean. Takeout, lounge and laundry on site. Salmon river near by. Reasonable prices. Would recommend.
