Loon Lake Campground (BLM)

Overview

Loon Lake Campground (BLM) is a lush, forested escape nestled in the Coast Range near Reedsport, Oregon. This Bureau of Land Management site offers a more developed camping experience than many of its rustic counterparts. Visitors are drawn to the crystal-clear waters of the lake and the surrounding old-growth Douglas fir trees. It serves as a popular seasonal destination for those seeking a balance between outdoor adventure and natural serenity in a well-maintained recreation area.

Location & Surroundings

Situated about 20 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, the park feels worlds away from the coastal winds. The campground sits on the south end of Loon Lake, a scenic 1,100-acre body of water framed by steep, emerald-green hills. The drive to the park via Highway 38 and Loon Lake Road follows the winding Umpqua River, providing a picturesque approach through dense forests and rugged terrain that defines the heart of the Oregon Coast Range.

Amenities & Park Features

Unlike many remote BLM properties, this site features several modern conveniences for RVers. While many sites are primitive, there are electric and water hookups available in specific loops to accommodate modern campers. The park is equipped with a concrete boat ramp, a designated swimming beach, and a day-use picnic area. Guests have access to vault toilets and potable water. The sites are paved and generally include a fire ring and picnic table, though travelers with larger rigs should check specific site lengths before arrival.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water sports are the primary draw here, with ample opportunities for waterskiing, wakeboarding, and kayaking. Anglers frequent the lake for its healthy populations of largemouth bass and trout. For those wanting a change of scenery, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is a short drive away, offering world-class OHV riding and sand boarding. Additionally, the nearby Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area provides a unique chance to see Roosevelt elk in their natural meadow habitat along the Umpqua River.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for families and water enthusiasts who enjoy a lively summer atmosphere on the water. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who prefer a wooded, mountain-lake environment over the exposed, windy coastline. Because it is a BLM-managed site, it appeals to travelers looking for a reasonably priced stay that offers more amenities than a typical boondocking location while maintaining a rugged, natural feel that connects them with the Oregon wilderness.

Our first time staying there. Was just as nice as everyone else has described. The sites are very clean, and the bathrooms are clean as well, although there is no running water at the sites.. But there are water faucets that do have potable water at different sites and when you check in, they will tell you where yours is. We started in sight number 32, which was great, except it was next to the old bathroom. So was fine as long as the wind didn’t shift. But when it does, you know you are next to the bathroom. Camp host Lacey allowed us to move to a different site the next day which we loved. So thank you, Lacey! She also provided us with wood for the fire pit. Another plus! I definitely think we will be back for future camping outings.

Really neat place. The park hosts were personable and attentive. The bathrooms were clean but there was an issue with the sink water in them. A lot of the beach had a bunch of dog turds everywhere it sucks when people don't clean up after themselves.

Beautiful beach, very busy at the picnic area and the camping was packed in. The space we were in was very very small to other campsites and could not fit more than 1 tent. Though the description said nothing of the different sizes. good friendly staff.

W O W . Really beautiful location. $5 day use BLM Park. Nice quality sandy beach, clean but not clear water, nice swim area in a protected cove that's great for supping, good lake for tubing too, tons of blue gill but not sure it's an angler lake. Loon Lake Camp Ground side of lake is much less nice, dusty, lots of boats, and very rednecky. (Images are of the less nice side)

Loon Lake was a wonderful lake to camp at and take out the kayaks. We kayaked the entire lake and got to see a lot of wildlife as well. It is a smaller and relatively calm lake that has many areas to explore.
