Los Padres/Ballinger

Overview

Located within the rugged expanse of the Los Padres National Forest, Ballinger Canyon offers a distinct high-desert experience for adventurous travelers. This area is specifically recognized for its extensive OHV trail system and stark, beautiful landscapes. Unlike standard commercial resorts, this is a primitive campground designed for self-contained RVers looking to immerse themselves in nature. The environment features unique red clay formations and rolling hills that provide a dramatic backdrop for a weekend of outdoor recreation and exploration.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the northeastern corner of the forest near New Cuyama, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet. The surroundings are characterized by the Cuyama Valley badlands, offering vast open skies and minimal light pollution. The climate is typical of the high desert, with hot summers and cool nights. Travelers will find the approach through Highway 166 scenic, passing through arid landscapes and ranch lands that transition into the steep, carved canyons and geological wonders of the Ballinger area.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive Forest Service site, the amenities are basic but functional for those prepared for dry camping. The site features vault toilets and individual campsites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. There are no water hookups or electricity available on-site, so it is essential to arrive with a full freshwater tank. The campground is notably big-rig accessible, featuring wide gravel turnarounds and spacious parking pads that can easily accommodate the large toy haulers and trailers typically used by off-road enthusiasts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the 68 miles of designated trails catering to various skill levels for dirt bikes and ATVs. Beyond motorized sports, the area is excellent for stargazing due to its remote location far from city lights. Hikers can explore the ridgelines for panoramic views of the Sierra Madre Mountains. While the immediate area is remote, a short drive into New Cuyama offers a glimpse into a classic California ranching town, providing a quiet change of pace from the active energy of the motorized trails.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for off-road enthusiasts who want immediate trail access right from their campsite. Because of the lack of hookups, it is best suited for self-contained RVers and dry camping experts who enjoy a rustic, boondocking-style experience. Families with dirt bikes or groups of friends looking for a rugged desert getaway will find the open layout perfect. If you value solitude and raw landscapes over resort-style luxuries, Ballinger Canyon provides the perfect basecamp for high-desert exploration.

Ballinger Canyon Rd. is where the Songdog Ranch is, a very nice, Hipcamp-affiliated set of rustic campsites and eclectic lodging. It is also a way to get to some OHV spots.

Great trails!!! unfortunately a lot of whoops but if you get on some of the more difficult single track it's not as bad.

Nice riding area, much more single tracks than SXS or even quad trails. We visited on a Sunday, and it was pretty quiet. We saw two groups of 2 or 3 riders that we came across the whole day

This place is phenomenal! If you're looking for a place to ride your OHV and do some camping at the same time look no further. Campsites are really nice and are big to big enough for a couple of toytrailer RV/camper plus vehicles, bikes(ATV) tents, and room to chill n hang out around the firepit or picnic table which each camp spot has both those amenities. Or just come for the day and pay to use the day use area for only 10 bucks. I would recommend coming with somebody who can be a buddies to ride with. They say that because there are probably hundreds of miles of trails here and the receptionist body so finding your way back can become quite confusing as it did for me and kind of spooked me as I was kind of lost for a minute and was hoping I wouldn't run out of gas. There is a trail map you can download on the rangers website, or bring your satellite GPS.
