Los Padres/Mount Pinos

Overview

Situated within the rugged beauty of the Los Padres National Forest, the campgrounds near Mount Pinos offer a true alpine escape for RVers seeking solitude. Located just north of the Los Angeles basin, this area provides a dramatic transition from the high desert to towering ponderosa pines. It is a place where the air is crisp, and the pace of life slows down significantly, making it a premier destination for those who value natural beauty over modern resort luxuries.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet near Frazier Park, CA, the surroundings are defined by steep ridges and vast coniferous forests. The park sits at the northern end of the mountain range, offering sweeping views of the San Joaquin Valley and the surrounding wilderness. The drive up the mountain is scenic but steep, leading travelers into a high-altitude sanctuary that stays significantly cooler than the valleys below during the summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

As a national forest site, the area features a rustic camping experience rather than a traditional RV resort. You will find developed sites equipped with sturdy picnic tables and fire rings, but it is important to note that there are no hookups or dump stations available on-site. Visitors should prepare for dry camping and utilize the vault toilets provided. The sites are generally well-spaced, offering a sense of privacy and a direct connection to the forested landscape.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in stargazing, as the summit is renowned for having some of the darkest skies in Southern California. Hikers can tackle the Chula Vista Trail to reach the Mount Pinos summit for panoramic views or explore the McGill Trail for a shaded trek through the pines. During the winter, the region transforms into a popular spot for snow play and cross-country skiing, while summer visitors enjoy bird watching.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for adventurous RVers who enjoy boondocking and want to disconnect from the digital world. Because of the winding mountain roads and smaller site turnarounds, it is best suited for small to mid-sized rigs or van lifers rather than large Class A motorhomes. If you are looking for a quiet retreat to enjoy the mountain breeze and incredible night skies, this high-country destination is a perfect fit for your travel style.

Spot 7 was great and flat. There were no bugs, probably because it was really windy. Might be better to go in the summer. It was a little too cold in May.

We did a little family getaway and stayed at Pine Mountain Club and traveled about 20 minutes up the mountain to play in the snow! We all had a blast.

This campground is smaller than campground McGill. It is a beautiful forest. The Chumash believe this campground in the center of the world!
