Lost Maples State Natural Area
Overview
Lost Maples State Natural Area is a cherished destination in the Texas Hill Country, renowned for its rare stand of Bigtooth maples that ignite with color every autumn. Unlike traditional high-density parks, this protected area emphasizes preservation and quiet exploration. Visitors find themselves surrounded by dramatic limestone canyons and the gentle flow of the Sabinal River, creating a sense of isolation and wonder that is hard to find elsewhere in the state.
Location & Surroundings
Located just outside Vanderpool, TX, the park sits in a rugged section of the Edwards Plateau. The drive to the park is an experience in itself, featuring winding roads that offer sweeping views of the Sabinal Canyon. The environment is defined by its verticality, with steep canyon walls protecting the delicate microclimate required for the maple trees to thrive amidst the typically arid Texas landscape.
Amenities & Park Features
RV travelers will find 30 campsites equipped with water and 30-amp electricity, accommodating rigs up to 35 feet in length. The campground is designed to blend into the scenery, featuring level pads and proximity to the river. While there is no cell service or Wi-Fi, the park provides modern restrooms with hot showers and a convenient dump station. It is the perfect setup for those who want a blend of basic utility and deep immersion in nature.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The park is a hiker’s paradise, offering over 10 miles of trails including the steep East Trail and the scenic West Loop. Anglers can try their luck in the Sabinal River, while birders search for the endangered Black-capped vireo. Just a short drive away, the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum offers a unique local stop, and the nearby town of Utopia provides small-town dining and supplies for those extending their stay.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and photographers who value scenery over luxury. It is a top choice for RVers looking to disconnect and enjoy a stargazing haven far from city lights. If you prefer a quiet, primitive-leaning environment and are comfortable navigating narrow park roads, Lost Maples offers a truly rewarding and peaceful Hill Country retreat.

Super pretty park. The area is beautiful. The hiking was nice. I love being able to take our dogs with us. The fact that Texas State Parks typically don’t use switchbacks to protect the assents is the only reason that I didn’t select 5 stars.

Beautiful park and campground. We were about two weeks early to see the autumn 🍂 colors; however, the entire park is gorgeous with very nice hiking. No cell or wifi service. Some of the campers drove into town to get service. We were completely content being off the grid for a few days.

Fascinating area for nature walk and had an amazing time! We brought homemade food, including panipuri as an Indian starter, which was perfect after completing two trails: the Maple Trail (~0.4 miles) and the East Trail (~3.1 miles). The trails offer beautiful scenic views with shade from maple trees, benches for resting, a peaceful stream, and vibrant fall foliage that peaks from late October to early November. We hiked to Monkey Rock and the Grotto on the East Trail, about 4 miles round trip. The weather was cool, so comfortable warm clothes and sturdy shoes are a must. Don’t forget to bring water during warmer months. Highly recommend this spot for nature lovers and anyone looking to combine great food with outdoor adventure!

Beautiful park with tons of great hiking trails. Hiking can be challenging, but the views are incredible. I’d recommend coming November-February when the weathers nice and enjoyable.

Visited the park on October 18. The leaves haven’t changed fully yet, but you can already feel the beauty of the season starting to show. The trails are peaceful, and the natural scenery is lovely—definitely a great spot to enjoy a quiet walk in nature!
