Lyman Lake

Overview

Lyman Lake State Park offers a refreshing oasis in the high desert of Northeastern Arizona. Formed by a dam on the Little Colorado River, this 1,500-acre reservoir is one of the few lakes in the region without power restrictions on boat motors. It provides a unique blend of water-based recreation and ancient history, making it a standout destination for RVers traveling through the scenic high plateau. Because the lake is not used for irrigation, the water levels remain reliable for recreation throughout the peak summer season.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of St. Johns, AZ, the park sits at an elevation of 6,000 feet, offering a mild climate compared to the lower desert floor. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and sagebrush, creating a stark but beautiful contrast with the deep blue waters of the lake. Its remote location ensures quiet nights and exceptional stargazing opportunities for those looking to escape city lights while enjoying the crisp, clean air of Apache County.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for various camping styles, offering 56 designated camping sites with ample space for different rig sizes. RV travelers can take advantage of 38 hookup sites, many of which provide water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electrical service. On-site facilities include modern restrooms with hot showers, a convenient dump station, and accessible boat ramps. The park also features a small store for basic supplies, ensuring a comfortable stay for those planning an extended visit to the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Peninsula Petroglyph Trail, which showcases ancient rock art from the Puebloan people. The lake is a premier destination for fishing for walleye, channel catfish, and largemouth bass. Beyond the park, visitors can explore the charming small-town atmosphere of St. Johns or take a scenic drive to the colorful landscapes of the nearby Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park, both located within a reasonable driving distance.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for boating and fishing enthusiasts who want a large body of water to explore without the crowds of larger resort lakes. It also appeals to history buffs and families who enjoy educational hikes and cultural discovery. If you prefer a scenic high-desert retreat with reliable hookups and plenty of space for water sports like skiing and wakeboarding, Lyman Lake is a perfect addition to your Arizona road trip itinerary.

Not a well-maintained park. It costs $25 just to PARK for one night; $50 if you want hook-ups. And I wouldn't park in that huge expanse of dirt if it was going to rain...MUD! I don't get why campgrounds use 200,000 watt lights on the outside of the bathrooms - they are visible from outer space! And ruins stargazing.

Great park to visit and camp! Great services and space to spend the day or weekend with the family. Good water levels, even if quite low. Sticky mud on the beach. It's not a swimming lake, but it's water! There's fishing and boating, tubing etc. They rent jet skis and boats. Sell bait and some supplies.

We drove quite a bit out of our way to come to this campground. We stayed in Lot 24 because it was near the bathroom and showers. Needless to say, they were both closed. This lot is also right next to all of the electrical panels. There is a constant humming coming from the main electrical so I heard the noise in this video all night until I put in ear plugs which I hate wearing. Our bed window was right next to all the panels. Did not see the host, yet they were in the close lot right next to us, yet our entry tag was on our truck window when we woke up. Only saving grace was our dog loving the water and the petroglyphs. Very expensive for no showers or restrooms, as well as, minimal sleep. Restroom near the cabins was open but shower was closed.

At 1200 acres and an elevation of 6000 Laymen Lake is a decent fishing lake with Largemouth bass, channel catfish, carp, and walleye. There are no restrictions on boat size. The average summer temperatures are in the 80’s and 90s for highs making this is very nice lake for skiing, family fun, or fishing. Lyman Lake is not far from other small fishing lakes. Well worth the drive if you want an opportunity to explore several lakes in the day and fish and relax.

Really nice state park, I rented a cabin it sleeps 6. It was $65 per night. They charge a $50 refundable deposit but I got it back within a week on my card. Cabin was Tidy and clean. Bathroom was a bit of a walk but not too bad. If this matters choose your location carefully. Lake is very pretty. Cabins could use more hooks to put things and some light bulbs needed replacing but I will come back again when I am in the area. Dogs allowed on leash. Some campers play their music pretty loud on weekends. But that seems to be typical in most state parks. I’m sure the hosts would intervene if you are needed some peace and quiet. That’s not the parks fault just inconsiderate people camping and partying. Fire ring, grill, and covered picnic table comes with the cabins. There was no drinking water when I was there but I knew that so I brought my own. Showers and toilets had water. Iron content made it unsafe to drink. Nice on site store available if you forget to bring something.
