Mackinaw/Avery Lake
Overview
Mackinaw/Avery Lake State Forest Campground offers a serene, back-to-basics experience deep in the heart of Northern Michigan. Situated near the charming town of Atlanta, this destination is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to provide a quiet retreat for those looking to disconnect. It serves as a primary gateway to the Mackinaw State Forest, providing a peaceful environment for travelers who want to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the wild.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is perfectly positioned on the scenic shores of Avery Lake, surrounded by dense stands of hardwoods and towering pines. This location is within Montmorency County, an area famous for its rolling hills and vast expanses of public land. The surrounding landscape is characterized by a network of pristine inland lakes and winding forest roads, offering a picturesque backdrop for travelers seeking the rugged beauty of the Michigan backcountry.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic state forest site, the amenities are simple and designed to preserve the natural environment. Travelers will find vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water rather than modern restrooms or electric hookups. Each site is equipped with a sturdy fire ring and a picnic table for outdoor dining. One of the most valued features of the park is the public boat launch, which provides direct access to the lake for fishing and paddling enthusiasts.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Atlanta is widely recognized as the Elk Capital of Michigan, and the surrounding forest is one of the premier places in the state to spot these majestic animals, especially during the autumn bugling season. Beyond wildlife viewing, the area is a haven for ORV and ATV riders, with miles of trails weaving through the state forest lands. Avery Lake itself is a popular spot for catching walleye, pike, and bass, making it a favorite destination for local anglers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for the self-contained RVer or tent camper who prioritizes solitude and nature over resort-style luxuries. It is a perfect fit for those who enjoy dry camping and want immediate access to water sports or trail riding. If you are looking for a peaceful home base to explore the wilder side of Michigan's Lower Peninsula without the crowds of larger parks, Mackinaw/Avery Lake is an excellent choice.
