Mahlon Dickerson Reservation (Morris County Park)

Overview

Mahlon Dickerson Reservation stands as the largest park in the Morris County Park System, offering over 3,200 acres of preserved wilderness. It provides a peaceful retreat for travelers seeking a natural setting without straying too far from urban conveniences. The park is characterized by its extensive trail system and lush hardwood forests, making it a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts in northern New Jersey. Whether you are passing through or staying for a week, the reservation offers a quiet, wooded atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the nearby metropolitan hustle.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Jefferson Township, the park is nestled within the Highlands region. The terrain is rugged and scenic, featuring Saffin Pond and several high-elevation ridges. Its proximity to Route 15 makes it accessible, yet the dense forest canopy provides a significant buffer from traffic noise. The surrounding area is a mix of small-town charm and vast natural preserves, offering a sense of seclusion that is rare in such a densely populated state. Visitors often appreciate the Headley Overlook, which provides sweeping views of the surrounding valleys.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping area is well-maintained, featuring paved sites specifically designed for RVs. Each RV site includes electric and water hookups, though there is no sewer connection at individual sites; a dump station is available for guest use. The sites are wooded and offer a reasonable degree of privacy compared to commercial resorts. Additionally, the park provides clean restroom and shower facilities and picnic tables at each site. For those traveling with horses, the park even offers specific trailer parking and equestrian-friendly trails, highlighting its versatility.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with over 20 miles of multi-use trails perfect for mountain biking and hiking. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest lake, for boating and lakeside dining. History buffs might enjoy the nearby Ford Mansion and Washington’s Headquarters in Morristown. For those who prefer a slower pace, Saffin Pond is an excellent spot for quiet fishing or birdwatching, where you might spot local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Who This Park Is Best For

This reservation is ideal for the nature-focused RVer who prioritizes access to trails and fresh air over luxury resort amenities like pools or clubhouses. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to introduce their children to the outdoors or for couples seeking a quiet weekend getaway. Because of its spacious wooded sites, it also appeals to travelers who value a rustic experience while still having the convenience of electricity and water. It is a true gem for those who want to experience the Garden State at its most natural.

I have camped here on 2 occasions. The sites are private and easy to access. The trails give everything you would want for easy hiking with a lot of opportunities for small discoveries. Streams, low and high land, and a nice little package of what the Delaware Water Gap offers

Tent campsite was beautiful and we had a nice weekend but I have a few issues - water source is really far away - bathroom was a Porta potty next to the parking lot and nothing else - we were told we can have two cars at the campsite but the first morning a guy came around and told us we couldn't have cars back here and no where did we see that rule. Like what the hell, we have to walk all our stuff to the campsite and park in the parking lot? We even called a few days before to ensure we can have cars and use a car tent and were told it's okay, but nope can't have a car next to our site. Two people left early because of this.

I love this place, or maybe I hate it. Where is it anyway? Google seems to think that I've been there. Google knows more about me than I do. Anyway, it's probably nice and I look forward to visiting some day, or maybe not We were walking on the Ogden Mine Rail path. It's a lovely place to walk, bicycle, picnic or fish. The downside is when the ATV'S go ripping up the path and leaving mud troughs and ruining the trail and the peace and quiet. The county park police need to patrol a little more and get these illegal vehicles off the trail.
