Malabar Farm
Overview
Malabar Farm State Park offers a unique blend of agricultural history and natural beauty in the rolling hills of Richland County. Once the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield, this site continues to operate as a working farm. Travelers seeking a quiet, rural atmosphere will find the small campground here a peaceful alternative to larger, busier commercial parks. It provides a rare opportunity to stay on a historic estate while enjoying the pastoral charm of an active farming environment.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the heart of Lucas, Ohio, the park is characterized by its lush pastures and dense woodlands. The landscape reflects Bromfield’s dedication to sustainable agriculture and soil conservation, creating a verdant backdrop for every campsite. Visitors are surrounded by the sights and sounds of a functioning farm, from grazing livestock to the rhythmic cycles of seasonal harvests. The rolling topography of the Mohican Valley offers scenic vistas that make it a favorite for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is intentionally modest, catering to those who prefer a rustic experience over a resort-style stay. It features 15 electric sites that accommodate various RV sizes, though guests should check specific site dimensions for larger rigs. While the park does not offer a central shower house, it provides latrines and water access nearby for convenience. The park is pet-friendly, allowing travelers to bring their companions along for walks through the extensive trail system that weaves through the woods and around the farm fields.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
History buffs can take guided tours of the Big House, a 32-room mansion famous as the wedding site for Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Cinema fans will recognize Pugh Cabin from the opening scenes of the film The Shawshank Redemption. Beyond the farm, the nearby Pleasant Hill Lake Park offers boating and swimming opportunities. For those willing to drive a short distance, the hiking trails and waterfalls at Mohican State Park provide even more outdoor adventure.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for history enthusiasts and RVers who appreciate a slower, more intentional pace of life. It is perfect for those who enjoy educational travel, as the farm’s demonstrations provide deep insight into Ohio’s agricultural heritage. Because of its smaller size and focus on nature and history, it is best suited for self-contained travelers or those seeking a quiet retreat in a scenic, culturally significant setting far from the noise of the highway.

Great place for a fall day! We did the wagon ride and it was a blast. I wish we could have the big house tour but with a young child I felt an hour would have been longer than he could handle. It’s beautiful and fun for the kids

I found out ways used to protect farm land. A butterfly bushes aout side of the entrance had butterflies gathering. Some of the displays encourage children to learn about farming and various animal. I enjoyed seeing real beaver fur as well as fox, racoon, skunk and touching them. The beehive which was their to peek into and info on how important they are to our lives.

Beautiful farm! Property is gorgeous, its like taking a step back in time once you enter the house. I highly recommend the house tour, our guide was amazing and funny! She gave interesting and personal facts and had an amazing sense of humor! Walk around the farm, pet the cows, goats, and chickens. Also when leaving drive to the overlook view, absolutely stunning!

It was really quiet and low key! They had a visitors center with a parrot who says hello and a fun learning space for kids! They also have a gift shop with cute items and maple syrup! The barn with all the animals was a huge hit! Horses, bunnies, cats, goats, pigs, and chickens were there while we visited! There was also a playset right beside the visitors center! I would definitely recommend it to anyone with kids mine had an amazing time or adults who are looking for a quiet place to visit with beautiful views, delicious maple syrup and a cute atmosphere.

What a great place! Tour the big house! Our tour guide was great! This place takes you back in time and inspires you to read a book or 2. Look to see when they are having an event, those can be fun too. We went on a quiet summer day.
