Malheur/Delintment Lake Campground
Overview
Malheur and Delintment Lake Campground is a serene destination tucked within the Ochoco National Forest. It offers a classic rustic experience for those looking to escape the hustle of modern life. Surrounded by towering ponderosa pines, the campground centers around the peaceful 53-acre Delintment Lake. It is managed by the Emigrant Creek Ranger District and provides a quiet retreat where nature and silence take center stage for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 45 miles northwest of Hines, Oregon, the park sits at an elevation of 5,600 feet. The landscape is characterized by open ponderosa pine forests and rolling high-elevation hills. Visitors reach the site via forest roads, which offer a scenic drive through the high desert transition into mountain timber. The high-altitude setting ensures cooler summer temperatures, making it a popular refuge during the heat of July and August for travelers seeking relief.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping experience designed for self-contained RVs and trailers. While there are no electricity or sewer hookups, the sites are spacious and well-spaced for privacy. Essential facilities include vault toilets and seasonally available potable water. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring. There is a convenient boat ramp for launching small watercraft, though internal combustion engines are prohibited to maintain the lake's tranquility.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is Delintment Lake, a premier spot for trout fishing and quiet paddling. Several hiking trails wind through the surrounding forest, including the lake-loop trails which offer excellent birdwatching opportunities. For those interested in geology, the nearby Malheur National Wildlife Refuge provides a broader look at the regional ecosystem. The vast expanse of the forest provides endless opportunities for wildlife photography and exploring remote forest service roads on foot or by mountain bike.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for nature enthusiasts and boondockers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern luxury. It is a perfect fit for families looking to introduce children to fishing or for solo travelers seeking quiet in the high country. Because the sites can accommodate moderate-sized rigs, it is a great choice for self-contained RVers who enjoy off-grid living while remaining within reach of the unique Oregon high desert landscape.

A beautiful little lake. Day use and campground available. It's very quiet. Toilets, too!

Always a great time up here! The seaweed was at a minimum which was nice! Unfortunately the well was out of commission but I'm sure thats temporary.

Water level was higher than past visits which led to cleaner clearer conditions. Well kept and maintained I hope everyone can keep it that way also.
