Malheur/Idlewild Campground

Overview

Malheur/Idlewild Campground offers a serene escape within the Malheur National Forest, serving as a peaceful retreat for those traveling through Eastern Oregon. Nestled among towering Ponderosa pines, this campground provides a refreshing contrast to the arid high desert landscape found in the surrounding valley. It is a well-maintained Forest Service site that prioritizes a quiet, natural atmosphere, making it a favorite for travelers seeking a genuine connection with the outdoors.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 16 miles north of Burns, Oregon, along the scenic Highway 395, the campground sits at an elevation of roughly 5,200 feet. This higher altitude ensures cooler temperatures during the peak of summer, providing a welcome relief for RVers. The surrounding landscape is defined by expansive forest vistas and gentle terrain, offering a sense of seclusion and wilderness while remaining easily accessible from the main roadway.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service destination, the park features vault toilets and seasonally available potable water. Each campsite is thoughtfully integrated into the timber, equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring with a grill for evening campfires. While there are no hookups available, the campground offers several paved spurs designed to accommodate larger RVs and trailers, which is a significant benefit for travelers in modern rigs seeking a rustic experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, as the park is a short drive from the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, a premier destination for birdwatching and photography. Hikers can explore local trails or head further into the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness for more rugged terrain and alpine scenery. The nearby town of Burns provides a glimpse into the region’s ranching heritage, offering local dining and essential supplies before you head back into the pines.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, unplugged experience away from the bustle of private parks. It is a perfect fit for travelers seeking to escape the high desert heat or those embarking on a long-distance road trip through Eastern Oregon. If you value dark night skies for stargazing and the scent of fresh pine, Idlewild serves as an excellent basecamp for your forest adventures.

Isolated and comfortable camping location. Decent birds. Excellent facilities and spacious. No water features or major natural attractions to keep you entertained.. besides the gentle trails nearby. Great place to stay if you enjoy a clean and calm campsite for its own merits, but dont expect to be overwhelmed by activities or natural beauty.

Idlewild campground Nice campground with good spacing between sites. Good loop trail to hike. Very clean bathrooms tho in need of paper. Big fire ring and picnic table at each site. We have a 22’ truck @ a 24’ trailer and had no problem finding a site at 5 pm. Several pull thru sites available. A little big truck highway noise at night but a great spot to spend the evening and a lazy morning.

Loved this place. So quiet. Very clean vault toilets. Water available for drinking. $10.00 a night. Private camp spots.

We camped here on a whim while traveling through the area, as a part of our circle tour of the country. What a GEM! We loved the ponderosa trees (they are huge!) and it was so quiet. Not a lot to do in the area, but a nice hiking trail starts from the campground, and the solitude can hardly be beat!

Even though the air was smoky from distant fires, the campground was still clean, quiet, and relaxing. The vault toilet was very clean and smelled good. Campsites were well spaced without a lot of braken and downed trees.
