Manatee Springs

Overview

Manatee Springs State Park offers a quintessential Florida experience centered around a massive first-magnitude spring. Producing an average of 100 million gallons of clear water daily, this destination is a sanctuary for both wildlife and travelers seeking a deep connection with nature. Visitors often find themselves immersed in a lush, wooded environment where the pace of life slows down significantly. It is a place where the crystalline spring waters meet the historic Suwannee River, creating a unique ecological haven for year-round exploration.

Location & Surroundings

Located just west of Chiefland, Florida, the park is tucked away in a quiet corner of Levy County. The landscape is dominated by ancient cypress swamps and hardwood hammocks, providing a dense canopy that offers plenty of relief from the sun. The park's centerpiece is the spring run, which flows into the Suwannee River via a scenic boardwalk. This secluded location ensures a peaceful retreat far from the noise of major highways, providing a serene natural backdrop for your RV stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping area consists of three loops, providing reliable electric and water hookups for RV travelers. While there are no sewer connections at the individual sites, a central dump station is provided for convenience. The park includes several practical features:

  • Modern bathhouse facilities with hot showers.
  • A concession stand offering snacks and rental equipment.
  • Dedicated picnic areas with grills for day use.

Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires under the stars. The park also features a stunning 800-foot boardwalk that meanders through the cypress forest, offering excellent vantage points for spotting aquatic life.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy over 8.5 miles of nature trails perfect for hiking or off-road cycling. The surrounding area offers several points of interest:

  • The Nature Coast State Trail for long-distance biking.
  • Direct access to the historic Suwannee River.
  • Local shops and dining in the nearby city of Chiefland.

During the winter months, the park becomes a prime spot for spectacular manatee viewing as the gentle giants seek the constant 72-degree spring water. These clear waters also allow for extensive paddling and kayaking opportunities throughout the year.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for RVers who prefer a rustic, nature-focused atmosphere over a high-density luxury resort. It is perfect for families wanting to swim in cool, clear waters and photographers looking to capture Florida's unique wildlife. Because the sites are nestled among mature trees, it is a favorite for those seeking seclusion and natural shade. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sounds of the forest and waking up near the water, this state park is a must-visit destination for your Florida itinerary.

Beautiful spring, perfect for cooling off in the hot weather. The swimming area is quite large. There is a separate ramp that you can use to paddle out into the Suwannee River and canoe/kayak rentals are available at the park. A beautiful boardwalk also takes you down to the river. There is a small concession stand and store, but we didn't visit as we tend to pack lunch and being what we need. We plan on returning in the colder months to hopefully spot some manatees.

This review is specifically for snorkeling the spring, which I did with my kids. Pros: Not very crowded, even on a Saturday - the swim area is relatively large. Multiple (3x) entry/exit points (stairs) into the swim area. There are shallow areas where you can stand and take a break if you're not a strong swimmer. Bathrooms had two stalls, cleanliness was average. Manatee has a particularly stunning blue color compared to other springs. Cons: There is quite a bit of algae that is covering most underwater surfaces and is coming off in mats and chunks. Kids weren't excited to come in contact with these. Water was clear enough, but noticeably more murky than other central Florida springs. Summary - I wouldn't likely come back exclusively to snorkel this particular spring, but it is well worth exploring as part of a larger visit while doing many other activities this park has to offer.

Great time visiting here, several options to do here, there was a cool bridge/walkway to check out, saw turtles and herons. There are kayak rentals here to do, a small snack shop that also sells floats, goggles, t-shirts etc. to swim there were a few areas to pick from to go in, definitely bring water shoes, goggles and a float, the water was freezing 🥶 to say the least but after getting in and maybe 10 minutes later it was somewhat tolerable. The bottom here looks to be around 40 feet, super clear it was definitely a fun experience!

Nice state park with plenty of access to springs. Also, easy park entry as the street that it is on literally dead ends at the park entrance. Also the boardwalk out to the Suwanee River is a must see! Tip: Bring your own floats to relax in the water Pros - Plenty of parking - Very friendly staff and rangers - Paved road Into park - Fantastic boardwalk - Numerous stairways into springs - Plenty of kayaks on hand for rent - Bathrooms are cleaner than most - Has a snack bar, small store and ice Cons - Stairways could use an extra step or two into water - Hiking trails were minimally marked and maintained

Beautiful crystal clear, cool springs for swimming, and a great little creek for paddling, that meets the Suwanee River a couple hundred meters down. Camp sites are adequate sized, with electric and water, a little vegetation between sights for visual break. Clean bathrooms. A great place to camp for a few days.
