Mancos

Overview

Mancos State Park offers a serene escape nestled in the scenic San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado. Often described as a hidden gem, this park centers around the beautiful Jackson Gulch Reservoir, providing a tranquil atmosphere for travelers looking to disconnect. Unlike bustling commercial resorts, this location focuses on the natural splendor of the high-country landscape. It serves as an ideal retreat for those who appreciate a slower pace of life, surrounded by ponderosa pines and shimmering blue waters. Whether you are passing through or staying for a week, the park offers a sense of seclusion that is hard to find elsewhere.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a few miles north of the historic town of Mancos, the park is perfectly positioned between the high desert and the alpine peaks. The surrounding environment is characterized by lush evergreen forests and rolling hills that offer stunning views of the nearby La Plata Mountains. Its proximity to the San Juan National Forest ensures that visitors are always close to wild, untouched landscapes. The elevation provides a refreshing escape from the summer heat, with cool mountain breezes often sweeping across the reservoir during the afternoon hours.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed for those who enjoy a more traditional camping experience. While the sites are semi-primitive, they provide privacy and a true sense of the outdoors for RVers. Key features include spacious campsites and essential on-site facilities:

  • Access to the boat ramp for non-motorized or wakeless boating.
  • Multiple vault toilets and seasonal water hand pumps located throughout the loops.
  • Direct access to the Mancos Spur Trail, which connects to the Colorado Trail.
The reservoir is regularly stocked with trout, making it a favorite for shoreline and boat fishing.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

One of the biggest draws to this area is its proximity to Mesa Verde National Park, located only a short drive away. Visitors can spend their days exploring ancient cliff dwellings before returning to the quiet of the state park. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the world-famous Phil’s World trail system is nearby, offering some of the best riding in the state. Additionally, the nearby town of Mancos provides a charming look at local art galleries, artisan coffee shops, and historic Western architecture, making it a delightful stop for exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is the perfect fit for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over a traditional resort. It is ideal for anglers looking to spend long mornings on the water and hikers wanting immediate access to forest trails. Families who enjoy dry camping or those with smaller rigs and vans will find the campsites particularly inviting. If your goal is to experience the raw beauty of Colorado while remaining close to significant cultural landmarks, Mancos State Park provides the perfect balance of solitude and accessibility.

Very pretty and very clean. We went for a few hours to be at the reservoir and SUP. We found the last good spot and we were there a few hours just enjoying the views of the mountains and the dam and the water. They close the office promptly at 4 pm exactly. Thankfully a ranger was kind enough to speak to me as I approached the door at exactly 4 pm and they had already locked up. You can drive over the dam and make a right and a long that road there are probably 10 access points to walk down to the water. There were bugs but not bad We saw Osprey and bunny and a deer as well as some chipmunks. The water was clean but the ground a bit muddy. We were down by the day use area near the North Campground.

Very nice small park with a lot of trees and plenty of shade. The lake is right across the road from us and there are many water spigots scattered around the campground. Our Loop was very quiet with a couple of Yurts here which were pretty nice. We would definitely come back Mancos is less than 10 minutes away and the brewery had a band , good pizza and the beer was okay.

Absolutely beautiful place!! Restrooms were clean. No showers operational at time of visit in late April. Horseshoe pits. Fire pits and grills at most sites. Yurts also available though I believe they are more for winter camping. Bear boxes in/around some sites.

Beautiful area but beware there is a $10 park pass that needs to be purchased. I was only there for maybe 1 hour 30 min at dusk and payed $10. It would be nice if it was prorated for those of us that work and pay taxes in Colorado when the daylight is so short. Just wanted to get my pole in the water but spent 20 min finding a spot and going back to pay 10$ for 1:10 min of fishing. Love Colorado so I payed but wish there was a better system.
