Overview

Flat Canyon Campground offers a refreshing high-altitude escape within the Manti-La Sal National Forest near Fairview, Utah. Situated at an elevation of approximately 8,800 feet, this US Forest Service facility provides a cool, shaded retreat from the intense summer heat of the valley. The park is characterized by its dense canopy of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir, creating a secluded atmosphere for travelers looking to reconnect with the natural world in a peaceful, wooded setting.

Location & Surroundings

Located just off the Scenic Byway 31, the park sits in the heart of Fairview Canyon. The surrounding landscape is a vibrant mix of mountain meadows and thick forests, offering breathtaking views of the central Utah highlands. Visitors often enjoy the immediate proximity to the Boulger Reservoir, which is within walking distance of many campsites. The air is crisp and the surroundings remain lush throughout the summer, making it a prime spot for mountain photography and wildlife viewing.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, Flat Canyon focuses on a rustic camping experience without modern hookups. The park features paved roads and spurs that can accommodate RVs and trailers, though travelers should verify site lengths for larger rigs. Essential features of the facility include:

  • Potable water access points located conveniently throughout the park
  • Maintained vault toilets to serve all camping loops
  • Individual sites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables

This is a dry camping destination where the primary draw is the quiet solitude of the forest rather than resort-style luxuries.

Hikers can also find numerous trails that wind through the subalpine terrain and past alpine lakes.

Super pretty, and open area for camping. Bathrooms were extremely clean for being big hole toilets as well.

Wonderful little campground. Just stayed one night. It's the first campground I've been too that says it has the QR code to pay and actually does. So slick. Also, I've never been here before, but it seems like the sites are newly resurfaced and the tables are relatively nice and new. There were some bugs that were moderately annoying, but not overbearing.

We camp here every year in July and love it. It’s beautiful and easy to get to electric lake, gooseberry reservoir, and all the smaller reservoirs surrounding. Bathrooms always seem to be clean enough, and we’ve never had any issues. Some spots have more shade, so we’ve figured out which ones those are and stick to them. We usually have only tent camped, but this year brought our trailer and used the group site, and it was great. We’ll be back next year!

Love this place, wish we could stay longer than 14 days. Beautiful place, best tree's, but it's getting cold at night and rains off and on
