Maplewood

Overview

Maplewood State Park offers a breathtaking escape into the heart of West Central Minnesota's transition zone. Spanning over 9,000 acres, this park is famous for its vibrant hardwood forests and rolling prairies. It provides a unique landscape where the eastern forests meet the western prairies, creating a diverse ecosystem that attracts RVers seeking a genuine connection with nature throughout the changing seasons.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside Pelican Rapids, the park is nestled within the Leaf Mountains, which provide some of the highest elevations in the region. The surroundings are defined by eight major lakes and several smaller ponds, offering plenty of waterfront views. The rugged topography and glacial hills create a secluded atmosphere, making it feel miles away from the hustle of modern life while remaining accessible via scenic Minnesota byways.

Amenities & Park Features

The primary area for RVers is the Grass Lake Campground, which features 32 electric sites designed to accommodate various rig sizes. While the park maintains a rustic charm, visitors have access to modern conveniences including seasonal showers, flush toilets, and a reliable dump station. Many sites offer a high degree of privacy shielded by thick canopy, and the well-maintained gravel pads provide a stable base for your home on wheels.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure awaits on over 25 miles of hiking trails, including the popular trek to the Hallaway Hill Overlook for panoramic views of the park. Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy easy access to the piers at Beers Lake and Grass Lake. Just a short drive away, the town of Pelican Rapids offers local charm, including the world’s largest pelican statue and various local eateries to explore after a long day of outdoor exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for RVers who prioritize peaceful immersion in nature over high-end resort amenities. It is a haven for birdwatchers, photographers, and those who enjoy watching the seasons change—especially during the spectacular fall foliage peak. If you are looking for a quiet, scenic basecamp that rewards exploration and offers a slower pace of life, Maplewood is a perfect fit for your travel style.

This state park is one of my favorites in America. I love coming here every year with my family. It is a good way to connect to nature and really feeling good! I love the fact that it is in a good location. The leaves are very pretty and the lake in the back round sets a good tone.

Every year our family comes to hike at Maplewood State Park in the fall and it is always gorgeous. The website says it is peak for leaves, but I think peak has already passed. It was still gorgeous though. This is a nice place to get outside and go on a fall hike!

What a beautiful park. I was only a day user, but the natural beauty was amazing in the Fall. Hallaway Hill is a must-do, as is driving the Park dr. I will come back again!

Amazing state park! Stayed at grass lake campground for 5 nights. The bathrooms/ showers were fantastic! They also had a fish cleaning station and dish washing area near the restrooms. Campsites were well spaced and a nice mix of sun and shade. The lakes nearby... Grass, Bass, Beers, and Lida were all very clear and beautiful. Fishing access was a little difficult if you didn't have a canoe or kayak. Gorgeous park, highly recommend

Maplewood is a fantastic place to visit and camp! It's large and offers many ways for people to enjoy the outdoors including hiking, swimming, horseback riding, cycling, fishing, boating and skiing. Particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves are changing, the park is a gem year-round. The staff are very friendly and helpful. While I appreciate the trails being open for horseback riding, I hiked the Nature Club trail and it's challenging to enjoy the beauty around you when you are having to constantly watch your feet to avoid stepping in horse manure .
