Mark Twain/Silver Mines
Overview
Silver Mines Recreation Area is a historic and scenic destination located within the Mark Twain National Forest. This area is named for the abandoned silver mines that operated here during the late 19th century. Today, it serves as a premier outdoor getaway where the St. Francis River carves through Precambrian granite, creating a unique geological landscape that draws visitors from across the region for its natural beauty and rugged character. This rugged destination provides a dramatic contrast to the rolling hills typically associated with the region.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just outside of Ironton, MO, the park is nestled deep within the St. Francois Mountains. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep bluffs, dense hardwood forests, and the rushing waters of Missouri's only true whitewater river. Its location offers a secluded atmosphere while remaining accessible to those exploring the historic Arcadia Valley, providing a perfect base camp for discovering the diverse ecosystems and geological wonders of the Ozarks. The area is particularly vibrant during the autumn months when the foliage transforms into a mosaic of crimson and gold.
Amenities & Park Features
This recreation area offers a mix of basic and electric hookup sites suitable for various RV sizes. While the park maintains a rustic feel, visitors have access to paved camping pads, picnic tables, and sturdy fire rings for evening gatherings. Vault toilets and drinking water stations are available seasonally, though travelers should note there are no sewer hookups on-site. The campground is thoughtfully designed to harmonize with the forest, offering spacious sites that provide a genuine sense of privacy among the oak and pine trees.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Silver Mines Trail, which leads hikers along the river to the historic mine ruins and the old stone dam. The river itself is famous for hosting the annual Missouri Whitewater Championships due to its challenging rapids. Visitors can also explore the Tiemann Shut-ins, where the water cascades over ancient rock formations into deep pools. For those willing to drive a short distance, the impressive granite boulders of Elephant Rocks State Park and the soaring heights of Taum Sauk Mountain are easily reachable for a day of exploration.
Who This Park Is Best For
Silver Mines is an ideal choice for nature photographers and outdoor adventurers who prefer a quiet, forest-centric experience over a busy resort. It is a fantastic destination for whitewater kayakers during the spring season and families looking to unplug and hike through Missouri’s geologic history. If you appreciate a peaceful environment with direct access to river activities and woodland trails, this park will perfectly suit your travel style. It is especially rewarding for those who enjoy self-contained camping in a setting that feels worlds away from the city.

Very quiet this time of year. September is the perfect month for camping in the ozarks and surrounding area. Cool evenings great for campfire gatherings.

Just a great hike and a swim. Great for snorkeling and family, now The hike on the other hand is very brutal not for the week.

Beautiful spot, great views, simple but clean sites. However, State Troopers - not park rangers - patrol the campites soon after the sun goes down. They're looking to ticket any and everyone they can. It was incredibly intrusive and weird, and absolutely not what I'm looking for during chill camping weekend. So unnecessary. Hard pass on this place from now on.

Pretty area, water was easily accessible. TONS of flies but I guess they don't really have control over that. Make sure to bring your bug spray!

What a gem of a campground! The campground hosts were so kind and welcoming! There are basically two campgrounds. One has hookups and the other does not. We stayed at the one with hookups but the primitive campground looked so nice because it was empty! The river was beautiful and our kids had a blast swimming and finding tadpoles.
