Marshall State Fish & Wildlife Area
Overview
Marshall State Fish & Wildlife Area offers a peaceful, rugged escape along the scenic Illinois River in the heart of the Midwest. Spanning over 6,000 acres of river backwaters, bottomlands, and timbered bluffs, it provides a sanctuary for both diverse wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this area focuses on primitive nature experiences and environmental conservation. Visitors come here to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in the quiet, natural rhythms of the river valley and its surrounding marshes.
Location & Surroundings
Situated primarily in Lacon, Illinois, the park is divided into three distinct management units: Marshall, Sparland, and Spring Bay. The landscape is heavily dominated by backwater lakes and sloughs framed by steep, lush bluffs that change beautifully with the seasons. Its strategic position on the Illinois River makes it a critical corridor for various migratory birds. The surrounding Marshall County area is characterized by small-town charm and vast agricultural fields, providing a wonderfully quiet and secluded backdrop for your next camping adventure.
Amenities & Park Features
RVers should note that the camping facilities here are Class C and Class B/S, which means there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites. The park features basic gravel pads and grassy areas that are most suitable for smaller rigs, truck campers, or van lifers who are fully self-contained. Essential amenities include a convenient public boat launch, scattered picnic shelters, and several miles of maintained hiking trails. While the facilities are intentionally modest, the direct access to the river remains the primary draw for visitors.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the premier activity here, with many anglers targeting largemouth bass and channel catfish in the nutrient-rich backwaters. Birdwatchers frequently visit to spot majestic bald eagles, herons, or white pelicans during their seasonal migrations. If you venture outside the park boundaries, the nearby town of Lacon offers local dining options and historic river-town architecture. For those interested in a longer journey, the Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway provides a beautiful driving route through the heart of the valley, connecting various historic sites.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is absolutely ideal for self-sufficient RVers who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over the busy amenities of a luxury resort. It is a true haven for hunters, anglers, and nature photographers who want to be just steps away from the water's edge. If you enjoy the challenge of boondocking or have a smaller camper designed for off-grid stays, you will likely appreciate the unspoiled natural beauty and the distinct lack of crowds typically found at more developed state parks.

Nice clean park for camping and fishing, beautiful scenery.

This lil spot was exactly as expected. It's boondocking with a 30amp. If you have all your own amenities - you'll be quite content. It's been a great spot to do remote work from which was the goal. You do get the in-town sound experience from traffic and dogs nearby etc. But overall the waterside view was very pretty. Every spot was clean with no trash and the bathroom was the typical state park pit toilet. If you're wanting a spot for family adventure, hiking, boating etc... this is not that spot.

2024 UPDATE!! By far the worst campground in probably the whole state. Campground host is nonexistent, theres homeless people basically just living there. People showed up at 2 in the morning and blasted music until 4am. The sites were so covered in trash, broken glass and random items we couldn't even park in the parking spot without popping a tire. Fire pit was literally overflowing with beer cans, diapers(YES DIRTY DIAPERS), balloons, glass etc wasn't even usable. Sites are literally right next to the road, and the truck traffic is nonstop so enjoy that. Bathrooms haven't been cleaned since the campground opened probably, literally feces on the walls, floor, somehow the ceiling. We were at a loss as to how an apparent state campground can look like this. They need to condemn the whole place. We planned on staying a week, we left the next day. DO NOT STAY HERE

One of our favorite camping areas. Small campground along Illinois River. Quiet and beautiful area. One side is for electric hookup and other is primitive tent camping. Campground host is one of the best of all the campgrounds we visit.
