Marten River

Overview

Marten River Provincial Park serves as a serene gateway to Northern Ontario’s vast backcountry, offering RVers a peaceful retreat within a majestic old-growth white pine forest. The park is characterized by its tranquil atmosphere and its unique ability to blend natural beauty with local history. It is a popular stop for those traveling the Highway 11 corridor who want to experience the rugged landscapes of the Temagami region while maintaining access to essential comforts.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 56 kilometers north of North Bay, the park is nestled at the southern edge of the Temagami wilderness. The landscape is defined by the winding Marten River and the sprawling waters of Wicksteed Lake. Travelers are surrounded by the iconic scenery of the Canadian Shield, featuring dense boreal forests and rocky shorelines that provide a sense of total immersion in the northern landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers a variety of campsites, including many equipped with electrical hookups that accommodate a range of RV sizes. Visitors have access to clean comfort stations featuring hot showers and laundry facilities, making longer stays more convenient. A primary highlight of the park is the replica 19th-century logging camp, an outdoor museum that provides a fascinating look into the region’s timber heritage through historical artifacts and structures.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the heart of the experience here, with the Marten River system offering exceptional paddling and backcountry canoeing routes. Anglers often find success fishing for walleye, northern pike, and bass in the clear lake waters. On land, the Transition Trail provides a scenic hiking loop through diverse forest ecosystems, and the sandy swimming beach is a favorite spot for families to relax during the warm summer months.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature lovers and history enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over a high-traffic resort. It is perfectly suited for RVers who enjoy birdwatching, photography, and exploring local heritage sites. Whether you are using it as a base camp for wilderness adventures or a peaceful overnight stop, Marten River provides a genuine and educational Northern Ontario experience.

We had a wonderful weekend camping at Marten River. It was nice and quiet even though it was the long weekend. The logging village was interesting. The river was nice to paddle on. Sites are pretty private. Lots of trees for separation and noise buffering. Dog beach area was Beau approved. Will be back.

Very nice park with a variety of sites to suit your needs. Lots of waterfront, or forest campsites. It is a quieter camp ground, with only 220 sites, so nothing felt overly packed. The main beach was okay, the sand not super soft and the slop is difficult to set up anything on, but the water is clear and clean. The park store has very limited options mostly some clothing and collectibles but outside the park the trappers trading post beside the park has everything you might need or have forgotten. Overall our first experience at this park was good I think we will be back to enjoy more of the area.

We had a nice site with our own private beach and kayak launch point. The downside is the highway is close by and you can hear the cars and trucks going by. The site we had was beside the beach, so kids playing all day long can be a nuisance to some, but didn't bother us. Kayaking was great. We did approx 20km in total.

park has a great setting. if you enjoy water, lots of places to paddle and swim. campsites are clean, staff friendly. we enjoyed our stay, all things considered. we arrived later than hoped 530pm. when we arrived at our site the previous tenants were still there.... very nice people who apologized. they thought they were booked for another day. an hour later we were able to start setting up. by 8pm finally able to sit down and relax. very disappointed that the park staff 1- did not check sites, 2- did not offer anything in the way of compensation... a discount at the store or..... very glad we weren't later

Great camping experience! My partner and I have been to Tobermory before and Marten River is a completely different experience. The campsites in our area (50+) are very close and you have to use your car to block the view of your site. Besides that, everything was very neat, staff was friendly and there were park officers walking around and checking on everyone every couple of hours - we felt very safe. The view of the lake is stunning and easily accessible, the beach is nice and there are two options of hiking trails. Overall, it was a great experience and we definitely recommend!!
