Massey Park (Dubuque County Park)

Overview

Massey Park offers a peaceful riverside escape within the Dubuque County park system. Located directly along the Mississippi River, this destination combines the rugged beauty of the river valley with accessible camping facilities. It is a well-loved spot for those who appreciate the natural rhythms of the water and a slower pace of life, making it a hidden gem for travelers exploring the scenic Driftless Area of Iowa.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 10 miles south of the city of Dubuque, Massey Park is nestled at the base of towering limestone bluffs. The park sits at Mississippi River Mile 570, providing a front-row seat to passing barge traffic and diverse local waterfowl. The surrounding landscape is characterized by lush foliage and winding roads that lead down to the river’s edge, offering a sense of seclusion while remaining close to modern urban conveniences in nearby Dubuque, IA.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is equipped with both electric and primitive campsites to accommodate different styles of camping. Travelers will find a public boat ramp and a marina, which serve as central hubs for water-based activities. Functional amenities include a modern shower house, seasonal restrooms, and a sanitary dump station. Families often gather at the playground or use the picnic shelters, while the abundance of mature shade trees ensures that many sites remain cool during the warm Iowa summers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Boating and fishing are the primary draws here, with easy access to the river's main channel for afternoon excursions. Beyond the park gates, visitors can explore the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium or take a ride on the historic Fenelon Place Elevator for panoramic views of the tri-state area. Nature enthusiasts should not miss the nearby Mines of Spain Recreation Area, which offers extensive hiking trails and a deeper look into the region's unique geological history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want to spend their days on the water. It appeals to RVers who prefer a more natural, county-park setting over a large commercial resort experience. If you enjoy waking up to the sound of the river and watching the sunset over the bluffs, Massey Park provides a quiet, scenic retreat that perfectly captures the spirit of the Upper Mississippi River Valley.

We had a great time at the bar enjoying live music on a Sunday afternoon. We were informed that live music is offered from 2:00-6:00 on weekends, weather permitting. This is a seasonal business open from May to October with a moderately busy boat dock. Four of us shared a number of really good appetizers, I especially liked the steak bites. If you are looking for an adult beverage, beer is served, no hard alcohol or wine.

My absolute favorite place along our favorite stretch on the Mississippi! We will come back again and again! We love Massey's! Always great music on the stage and the owners are friendly and remember us year after year!

Older county campground 30Amp grass sites, muddy when we were there. Kind of hard to find the sign is blocked by trees steep hill to get into the park off of the highway. If you miss the turn don't try and go through the little town - Village NO WAY BACK TO MAIN ROAD ITS A DEAD END! It would be a good place to camp and boat.

Great place to visit while boat on Mississippi River. Love sitting on their deck with a drink and listening to live music on a Sunday afternoon. Also have great breakfast. Very reasonable boat fuel prices.
