Matagorda Bay Nature Park

Overview

Matagorda Bay Nature Park is a 1,600-acre coastal preserve where the Colorado River empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Managed by the Lower Colorado River Authority, this destination provides a unique landscape where freshwater and saltwater ecosystems converge. Visitors will find a tranquil environment defined by expansive coastal marshes and miles of pristine shoreline. It is a premier location for those seeking a deep connection with the Texas Gulf Coast in a protected natural setting.

Location & Surroundings

Located at the southern end of FM 2031 in Matagorda, Texas, the park occupies a narrow peninsula between the river and the bay. This isolated location ensures a quiet atmosphere away from busy highways. The surrounding landscape features the Matagorda Jetty, which extends into the Gulf, and vast wetlands that serve as critical habitats for local wildlife. The geography makes it a prime birding corridor, especially during seasonal migrations when various species frequent the shore.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers well-maintained RV sites equipped with full hookups, including 30 and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer. Most sites feature level, paved pads and include a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings. On-site facilities include the Matagorda Bay Nature Center, which offers educational exhibits and kayak rentals for exploring the river. Clean restrooms, showers, and a laundry facility provide necessary comforts for long-term travelers while maintaining a nature-focused vibe.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with activities centered on the water. Anglers frequent the area for world-class coastal fishing along the jetty or within the bay. Beachcombing and shelling are popular along the miles of drivable beach nearby. For those interested in local history, the small town of Matagorda offers a glimpse into early Texas settlements. Nature lovers can traverse the paddling trails or spend time at the various observation decks scattered throughout the wetlands.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prefer scenic seclusion over high-energy resort amenities. It is a haven for serious birdwatchers, anglers, and photographers who appreciate the raw beauty of the coastline. Because the park accommodates large rigs with ease, it is a favorite for big-rig owners seeking a quiet coastal retreat. If you value direct access to nature and enjoy the sound of the ocean, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

The park is clean, well maintained, and the staff were friendly. The price is a tad higher compared to other parks. With that said, the park has a lot perks/bonuses. The Good 1. Bathrooms are clean, secured, fairly new. The showers were nice with double curtains. 2. Basically on the beach and nice views. 3. It's very easy to come and go as you please. Just have your vehicle pass displayed. 4. Fishing docks on the property that are lit at night. The Not So Good (Very Minor) 1. As stated mutiple times in other reviews. The mosquitoes are really bad. They are like normal mosquitoes but on steroids. Bring spray, candles, and sticks... whatever it takes. 2. No major large stores nearby. Lot of independent and mom and pop places in town. 3. During the off season it seems most places are closed in the town. We liked it, because there were less people and traffic.

A clean park with RV full hookups, Airstream trailer & bungalow rentals. Soft water, clean bathrooms, decent WiFi coverage throughout. Lots of mosquitoes and grass sticker burrs. The Gulf coast is just a short walk away. Occasional controlled burns across the river.

Best place for fishing day and night!! Lighted pier available and safe banks! Beaches within walking distance. Rates are affordable especially during off season which start’s Oct 1 and you can book 6 months in advance!! Truly relaxed and enjoyed breaking in my new RV for my first trip 😁👍🏼 Friendly people all around and clean area!! I will definitely return yearly or more! I highly recommended this location!!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My family and I stayed at Matagorda Bay Nature Park from February 4 – 14, 2024. Nestled along the Texas Gulf Coast, this park is a hidden gem. This park is located where the Colorado River meets the Gulf of Mexico, that creates a stunning back drop for a picturesque view. The staff and camp hosts were friendly and helpful, providing us with all the information we needed to make the most of our stay. You would see the camp hosts enjoying some of their time on the dock fishing and relaxing. We enjoyed talking to them about the area and their travel experiences on a couple of occasions. We were in south loop site #12, a waterfront back-in with full hook-ups on a concrete pad, with a patio, that included a table set and pergola, and was surrounded by well-groomed grass. A perfect space to enjoy our evenings and watch the breathtaking sunsets over the bay. The site was spacious enough to accommodate our 42’ fifth wheel with our car parked in front of it. However, we had to park our truck in the designated extra parking area, as these spots are designed to fit only one vehicle in addition to the RV. The amenities include Restrooms, shower facilities, a key code laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers, that you pay for in the visitor Gift/Souvenir Shop. They also have a 24-hour ice machine. The park is pet friendly, however there is no designated enclosed dog park, there is plenty of area to take your pets for long walks. Matagorda Bay Nature Park offers a variety of amenities and activities for visitors. The park features a visitor center where you can learn about the local wildlife and ecosystem. There are also kayak and paddleboard rentals available for those looking to explore the bay from the water. For bird enthusiasts, the park is a haven with numerous bird-watching opportunities, especially during migration seasons. We were there when there were several storks and a couple of large cranes. The beach access is another fantastic aspect of the park. We spent several afternoons walking along the sandy shores, collecting shells, and enjoying the sound of the waves. The park also provides picnic areas, playgrounds, and a mini golf course making it a great destination for families with children. One of our favorite activities was walking along the granite jetty during sunset. The jetty, constructed with beautiful, huge sturdy granite stones, offers stunning views of the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The natural beauty of the granite, with the water crashing over the stones during sunset, made for unforgettable picturesque evening strolls. *While our stay at Matagorda Bay Nature Park was indeed delightful, it's IMPORTANT TO NOTE a minor concern we encountered. During our time there, we observed that the water in the bay appeared brown in color, that left a slight film on our dishes when we left them out to dry. As a precautionary measure, we opted not to drink it and instead relied on our own water supply. While this did not significantly detract from our overall experience, it's worth considering for future visitors who may rely on the park's water sources. Nonetheless, this minor issue did little to dampen our enjoyment of the park's natural beauty and abundance of recreational activities. If you are looking to stay in the Matagorda Bay area, I would recommend this park!
