Matson's Big Manistee River Campground

Overview

Matson's Big Manistee River Campground offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a deep connection with Michigan’s natural beauty. Situated directly along the banks of one of the state's most iconic waterways, this park balances functional RV accommodations with an unhurried, nature-first atmosphere. Whether you are arriving for the legendary fishing seasons or simply to enjoy the quiet rustle of the woods, the park serves as a welcoming gateway to the Manistee area’s diverse outdoor recreation. It provides a authentic Northwoods experience that focuses on the sights and sounds of the river valley.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is nestled within the lush landscapes of Manistee, MI, providing a perfect home base for exploring the Manistee National Forest. The park’s position on the Big Manistee River ensures that water is never more than a short walk away. Surrounded by dense hardwoods and rolling river valley terrain, the environment feels secluded and peaceful, yet it remains conveniently accessible to the city of Manistee and the sweeping dunes of the Lake Michigan shoreline. The proximity to the river makes it a prime spot for observing local wildlife and seasonal bird migrations.

Amenities & Park Features

Designed with the modern RVer in mind, the park features a variety of site types including full hookup sites with 30 and 50-amp service. Anglers will particularly appreciate the specialized facilities, such as the on-site boat launch and dedicated fish cleaning station. For added convenience, guests have access to clean restrooms, hot showers, and laundry facilities. The spacious sites and well-maintained grounds ensure a comfortable stay for both short-term visitors and those looking for a peaceful seasonal retreat in the heart of Western Michigan’s wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the campground borders, the region is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. You can spend a day exploring the historic Manistee Riverwalk or visiting the lighthouses that guard the Lake Michigan coast. Hiking and biking trails wind through the nearby national forest, offering miles of exploration. For a change of pace, the nearby Little River Casino Resort provides entertainment and dining options, while the charming downtown area of Manistee is filled with local shops, breweries, and historic Victorian architecture that reflects the area's rich maritime history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for dedicated anglers and boating enthusiasts who want immediate access to world-class salmon and steelhead fishing. It also appeals to families and retirees who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over a high-activity resort. If your travel style favors scenic river views and a relaxed pace where the main evening entertainment is a campfire under the stars, Matson's Big Manistee River Campground is the perfect fit. It is best suited for those who value nature, solitude, and the great outdoors above luxury amenities.

We decided to do a last minute kayak trip. We called and she has a group leaving in 20 minutes if we could make it. We arrived and everyone was friendly and welcoming!

Rented a cabin. Floors of the cabin are not clean, couch had dog hair on it, pillows smelled of dog, and water service smells terrible. The location on the river and trees are great. I would pick a hotel or other campground over Matson's. Place needs some maintenance. May be fine for tent camping or if you want to rough it, but not luxury for certain.

Great rustic campsite, my buddy had reserved for the weekend. Right across the drive from the river. Staff was incredibly friendly. And even made a suggested charter for my buddy to harvest some salmon.

Great campground on the Big Manistee River. We rented the lodge for a multi-family trip and it was perfect for our needs. Clean, comfortable, and a great location on the river. Owners are friendly, helpful, and were quick to respond both before we arrived and while we were onsite.

Components of a good campsite in descending order or importance: 1. Good size lots; 2. Clean restrooms; 3. Friendly hosts/campers; 4. Amenities; 5. Something special. Matsons has very small lots, clean restrooms; Friendly hosts but unfriendly campers; no amenities and an amazing river. Hence the rating. Good for boat based fisherman but not families. I'd advise the owners to drop a few lots and develop into more amenities.
