Overview

Max V Shaul State Park offers a peaceful retreat nestled within the scenic Schoharie Valley. This smaller state park is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and lush, wooded landscapes that provide a true escape from the bustle of daily life. Unlike commercial resorts, it prioritizes a quiet environment where the focus remains on the natural beauty of Upstate New York. It serves as an excellent base camp for those looking to explore the historic and geological wonders of the region in a serene setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Fultonham, New York, the park is bordered by the Schoharie Creek and surrounded by rolling hills. The landscape is characterized by towering trees and wide-open green spaces that offer a stunning backdrop throughout the seasons. Its location in the Schoharie Valley makes it a prime spot for viewing vibrant fall foliage or enjoying the lush greens of summer. The surrounding area is largely rural, offering travelers uninterrupted peace and a sense of seclusion in the heart of nature.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several shaded campsites designed to accommodate both tents and RVs. While this is a primitive camping destination without hookups, it provides essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay including:

  • A modern bathhouse with hot showers and flush toilets
  • Spacious picnic areas equipped with tables and fire rings
  • A playground and designated playing fields for recreation
  • Well-maintained nature trails for walking and birdwatching

These features provide the perfect balance for travelers seeking a back-to-basics experience without sacrificing cleanliness and accessibility.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A short drive from the park leads to the famous Vroman’s Nose, a landmark hiking trail that provides panoramic views of the valley floor. For those interested in underground exploration, both Howe Caverns and Secret Caverns are located nearby, offering fascinating geological tours. Water enthusiasts often visit Mine Kill State Park for its swimming pool and boating access to the reservoir. Additionally, the nearby village of Middleburgh offers local shops and charming small-town dining for a relaxing afternoon away from the campsite.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and RVers who prefer a rustic, quiet camping experience over a high-activity resort. It is perfect for travelers who value privacy and a deep connection to the outdoors. Families looking for a safe, open space for children to play will find the grounds inviting and manageable. It is also an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers seeking a scenic and well-maintained home base while exploring the unique landmarks of Schoharie County.

The campsites are very well maintained. Most sites have a lot of space between them. The surrounding forests are beautiful and quaint. Mine Kill State Park has all of the attractions and is only 15 minutes south.

I love this park. I've stayed here 3 times in 2 months. The Schoharie Valley and the Catskills are great places to ride, fish and hike. Groceries, restaurants and gas are available in Middleburgh, with large box stores in Cobelskill. The sites are spaced and don't leave you feeling cramped like some other parks. Mine Kill is only a few minutes south with a free pool to cool off.

Super nice park. Spending two nights here camping. The camp sites are much larger then advertised on Website.

This is our second time to this campground. Came first in 2020 and now in 2025. Bathrooms were very clean and spacious with hot water and free showers! Campsites were nice and wooded and spread out. Aside from a few overtired kids screaming at bed time the campground was really quiet and peaceful and we had a very pleasant experience. There were a lot of woodpeckers around. I’ll leave it up to you if that’s a pro or con lol
