McCreedy Campground

Overview

McCreedy Campground serves as a vital resting point for those exploring the rugged landscapes of Northern Manitoba. Located within the city limits of Thompson, it offers a functional space for RVers to recharge. The park provides a wooded setting that feels disconnected from the industrial pulse of the city while remaining conveniently accessible. It is often the primary choice for travelers heading further north or those using Thompson as a base for wilderness excursions.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the boreal forest, the campground is positioned near the banks of the Burntwood River. Thompson is known as the Hub of the North, and the park reflects this identity by blending urban convenience with the untamed wilderness of the surrounding Shield country. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by dense spruce and tamarack trees, providing a sense of seclusion despite being minutes away from major shopping centers and regional services.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed with practicality in mind, offering a mix of serviced and unserviced sites. Most sites feature power and water hookups, suitable for a variety of RV sizes and travel needs. On-site facilities include the following:

  • Clean washrooms and shower houses
  • A central dump station for waste management
  • Fresh potable water access for all guests

Each site typically includes a fire pit and picnic table, encouraging guests to enjoy the quiet northern evenings under the stars. The layout is manageable for most rigs, making it a reliable stop for those on long-haul journeys through the province.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Exploring Thompson starts with the Heritage North Museum, which details the region's mining and boreal history. Nature lovers should not miss the short drive to Pisew Falls Provincial Park, home to one of Manitoba’s highest and most spectacular waterfalls. Within the city, the Spirit Way walking trail offers a chance to view large-scale murals and wolf sculptures. For those interested in local wildlife, the Boreal Discovery Centre provides insight into the flora and fauna that thrive in this unique subarctic climate.

Who This Park Is Best For

McCreedy Campground is ideal for long-distance road trippers navigating the long stretches of Highway 6. It appeals specifically to travelers who value utility and a natural atmosphere over resort-style luxury. It is a perfect fit for wilderness enthusiasts looking for a comfortable home base before heading out for fishing or hunting trips. If you are looking for a reliable, no-frills stop to experience the authentic spirit of Northern Manitoba, this park serves that need perfectly.

We only parked our car in this location to take the train to Churchill. The owner is friendly and kind. The service fee is only CA10 per day and they also provide shuttle service to and from the station. I am strongly recommend their service.

The owners are amazingly kind people and help you out all the time! Great stay, clean and lots of arctic hares at night during the fall. Loved it! Perfect for parking your RV too, when going out to Churchill.

We did not stay at the campground, but rather used their service that stores your car and drives you to the Thompson train station for your trip to Churchill. Fantastic service, and waiting for you at the station on your return. 2023 rates were $10 day or $50 a week.

Owner Nick is super nice guy. Not only do they have campsites but they also let you park your vehicle there if you are going on the train to Churchill. The icing on the cake is that they then drive you to the train station and pick you up on your return. A fantastic small town friendly service!
