McFarland Park

Overview

McFarland Park offers a scenic retreat on the shores of the Tennessee River. Located in Florence, Alabama, this city-managed park provides a blend of natural beauty and convenient access to local culture. It serves as a popular destination for those who enjoy water views and a relaxed pace, featuring a well-maintained campground that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding public recreational facilities. Whether you are passing through the Shoals area or staying for a week, the park offers a welcoming atmosphere with impressive vistas.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at the foot of the O'Neal Bridge, the park sits directly along the shores of Pickwick Lake. The landscape is defined by its immediate proximity to the water, offering campers panoramic views of the river and the local harbor. The site is characterized by its mature hardwood trees, which provide ample shade and a sense of privacy from the nearby city center. Its unique location bridges the gap between the natural serenity of the riverbank and the vibrant energy of the nearby downtown Florence area.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground consists of 60 sites designed to accommodate various RV sizes. While the park maintains a natural feel, it provides several essential services to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Sites equipped with water and 30/50-amp electricity hookups.
  • Access to modern bathhouses featuring clean restroom and shower facilities.
  • On-site amenities including a playground, disc golf course, and multiple boat ramps.

While sites do not offer individual sewer hookups, a convenient dump station is located within the park grounds for guest use.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Exploring the local area is easy, as the park is just minutes from Historic Downtown Florence. Travelers can visit the Rosenbaum House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright structure in Alabama, or learn about the region’s musical legacy at the nearby Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. For those seeking outdoor activity, the paved walking and biking trails within the park connect to broader local paths, offering miles of exploration along the river. Fishing is also a primary draw, with several piers available for public use.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for boating and fishing enthusiasts who want immediate access to the Tennessee River. It is also a fantastic choice for travelers who prefer being close to urban amenities like local restaurants and boutiques while still enjoying a waterfront setting. Families will appreciate the extensive on-site recreation, such as the playground and picnic shelters. It is best suited for those looking for a lively, community-focused park experience rather than a secluded, deep-woods wilderness stay.

One of my favorite places to go when it’s warmer or when I need a breath of fresh air! Love going by and hearing the water, watching the sun rise or set! Makes for very great pictures. Sometimes you will see birds traveling. Restrooms stay generally clean to be a park!

A beautiful park and marina on the Tennessee River. There are lots of open pace riverside for picnicking and activities. A good spot for fishing, too. The park is kept clean and safe. There are a few shelters that can be reserved for events.

My first visit to Florence Alabama. I love taking night photos, and the hotel staff recommended two places, McFarland Park and the Dam. McFarland Park has a privately owned area and public areas. It is located on the banks of the Tennessee River and this is a boat ramp, harbor and lovely floating restaurant. There is plenty of lit parking at night and room to roam and play. The park is very clean, nice place for a picnic.
