Accidentally stumbled across this little gem of a park and so glad I did! It was so beautiful! We stayed in one of the huts (#6), it was perfect for being a basic shelter. It has a screened in back porch that sits on stilts so you can sit back there and see down across the lake. It has two bunk beds although we didn't use them. They're very well made and sturdy. We put an air mattress on the back porch. It was raining and perfect sleeping weather. It has a nice picnic table inside and a couple of shelves and a little countertop for things. It also has electricity and an air conditioning/heating unit in the window. It was very clean and we'll maintained. There are a few insects inside so if you're a little weird about bugs you may want to bring a little bug spray but you're out in the middle of nature so they're just visiting you. There are eight huts total, some have a steep decline to get down to the lake so if you're going to stay here I recommend #1, has an outdoor picnic table lake accessable, #5 & 6 have best lake accessibility to walk down but no outdoor picnic table, which i wish it did. Wear good shoes bc it is really rocky. Lake is clean and quiet. Our first night there was no one else there so it was extremely quiet and it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. We only saw a boat twice the whole stay and might've been the same boat. So beautiful! The park rangers were so hospitable and very kind. They let you have your privacy but they made frequent rounds through our section so I felt completely safe and enjoyed having them around. They do not sell firewood but down the road before you get to the park entrance there is a man on the left who sells firewood pieces 10 for $5 at the end of his driveway, had a cash box next to the cord. Honor system. Or they allow you to gather and forage. Also some leave wood behind so check around! The restroom/showers were the normal state park showers with electric, no soap so take your own. There's a coin slot for the shower but the shower came on for free so maybe that's an old system. Either way, try the shower water first before you put quarters in just in case. So I really enjoyed myself here and highly recommend visiting. It's one of the best parks I've been to. Can't wait to come back next year! Happy camping fellow nature adventurists!

They're the best free State Park around. We love this place for a local staycay, playday at the cute kids playground, or swimming at the lake.

We stayed in Post Oak campsites. The campsites were well maintained, but comfort stations could use a little work. We were surprised at the lack of quality of the showers and no hand soap at the sinks after staying at other state parks. Very nice trails and beautiful views of the lake. Dog friendly. Very friendly staff in the office and when encountering them around the park. We would return to this park to camp again.

Loved our stay. Camp Sites are beautiful, level in Buster. Loved the lake and you are able to ride bikes. The best hiking though is 25 minutes away at the natural area. It's fewer miles but you travel slow on the backrooms to it. It's WELL worth it though. Beautiful scenic trails.

Very clean park. Very clean restrooms. Friendly staff in office. Other visitors were courteous and not loud. A relaxing time. Decent shore fishing. The bunk beds in the cabins are twin size. Bring some blankets to make them soft. The window unit a/c and heaters work very well. A good experience. Great trails to walk.

One of the cleanest state parks I’ve stayed at. Beautiful campgrounds and campsites. Staff at the park office was outstanding. Can’t wait to visit again soon.

1st time and will definitely be back. Very well maintained, clean, quiet and peaceful smaller park. RV sites are flat and treed enough so you have some privacy. Bathrooms clean. Really tremendous terrain and rock formations. We fished off the dock and caught some good sized sunfish ( we catch and release). The office staff are super friendly and helpful. No ice or worms at office but there is a small store just outside the park entrance. A couple of local boys sell firewood from a self serve stand in front of their home about a mile from the gate- $5 for 10 pieces.

Very pretty park not to far from DFW. Clean facilities. Would definitely go back.

We usually make a weekend out of McGee twice a year. We love this little hidden gem. The water is clean and perfect and the huts are great to get away and they have a fireplace and heat and air unit but no bathroom but they have one a short walk near by. The hiking trail is always fun. Huts are $50 a night also.

Stayed in a hut. Very nice. Had a great time with other friends, but very disappointed the hiking trails were closed for controlled burns on the weekend of spring break. Most disappointing is that there was no notice of this anywhere. I drove all the way out there (about 25 minutes each way) twice to learn this. A sign by the highway would have been awesome. Or even a sign at the Park Office. No excuse for the lack of communication.
