McGee Creek Campground
Overview
McGee Creek Campground offers a quintessential high-altitude camping experience tucked away in the Eastern Sierra. Situated within the Inyo National Forest near Mammoth Lakes, this site provides a serene escape for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. The campground is known for its scenic mountain views and proximity to vibrant creek waters, making it a peaceful retreat for RVers who prioritize quiet, forest-based environments over commercial resort settings.
Location & Surroundings
Located just off Highway 395, the campground sits at an elevation of approximately 7,500 feet. The landscape is defined by dramatic granite peaks and groves of aspen trees that turn vibrant gold in the autumn. While it feels remote and tucked away from the main highway, travelers still have convenient access to the town of Mammoth Lakes. It is an ideal spot for those wanting to explore the rugged beauty of the Eastern Sierra region.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic, U.S. Forest Service-managed facility rather than a full-service RV park. Guests should expect vault toilets and drinking water available via hand pumps throughout the campground. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening campfires under the stars. The park offers spacious sites that can accommodate various RV sizes, though guests should check specific site lengths ahead of time to ensure compatibility with their equipment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers will find plenty to do within a short drive. The campground serves as a primary trailhead for the McGee Creek Canyon trail, which offers spectacular hiking opportunities into the John Muir Wilderness. Fishing enthusiasts frequent the creek for trout, while those looking for geological wonder can visit the nearby Crowley Lake or the stunning rock formations at Mono Lake. The area is a hub for outdoor recreation during the summer and fall months.
Who This Park Is Best For
McGee Creek Campground is perfect for nature lovers and independent travelers who prefer a rustic wilderness experience. If you are an RVer who enjoys being surrounded by pine trees, quiet nights, and immediate access to hiking trails, this location is an excellent fit. It is best suited for those who are self-contained and appreciate a back-to-basics approach to camping, rather than those seeking modern amenities like electrical hookups or high-speed connectivity.

Great quiet spot away from the busy village or bigger RV spots. Rented an RV and all amenities provided some for a fee. Overall my family loved this place and we'll definitely be back.

Awesome campgrounds! The location was great for several nearby lakes for hiking, fishing, and relaxation. The staff at McGee campground were so awesome especially Emily. She was so helpful, patient, knowledgeable and communicative to 1st time RV renters. The RV rental was clean with all the amenities needed for a relax stay. We already made our 2026 reservation. 😎

Very beautiful campground. A little tricky to get around with our camper but nothing worth really stopping us from going back again. Everyone was very nice. The view was absolutely amazing. Right across from Crowley Lake and about 20 minutes to Mammoth Lake the town and all the amenities it possesses. I would recommend this place to anyone.
