McKenzie's RV Park & Campround

Overview

McKenzie's RV Park & Campground offers a serene home base for travelers exploring the rugged beauty of Northern Manitoba. Located in the historic community of Cranberry Portage, this park provides a peaceful wilderness atmosphere that appeals to those looking to escape the bustle of more crowded tourist hubs. It serves as a vital gateway for visitors journeying toward Flin Flon or deeper into the boreal forests, blending a rustic northern charm with the essential comforts needed for a successful road trip.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled within a landscape dominated by ancient rocks and pristine waters. It sits just a short distance from the shores of Lake Athapapuskow, one of the premier fishing destinations in the province. The surrounding area is characterized by dense forests and crystal-clear lakes, offering a true sense of isolation and tranquility. Being in Cranberry Portage means you are strategically positioned between the Grass River and the northern shield, where nature remains largely untouched and breathtakingly expansive.

Amenities & Park Features

Guests can expect well-maintained sites that cater to modern RV needs without sacrificing the natural feel of the campground. The park features full hookup options including water, sewer, and electricity to ensure a comfortable stay. Each site is designed to accommodate various rig sizes, providing enough space for slide-outs and outdoor gear. Essential facilities like clean washrooms and laundry services are available, making it a reliable stop for those on extended northern expeditions through the Manitoba wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the exceptional outdoor recreation. Anglers flock to the region for world-class trophy fishing, specifically targeting lake trout and northern pike in the nearby chain of lakes. Adventure seekers can explore the hiking trails and paddling routes of Grass River Provincial Park, which is just a short drive away. For a change of pace, the nearby mining town of Flin Flon offers unique geological sightseeing, local museums, and full urban services within a rugged landscape.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for outdoor enthusiasts and avid anglers who prioritize proximity to the water and forest over resort-style luxuries. It is perfectly suited for those seeking a quiet northern retreat or travelers needing a dependable base camp while exploring the northern frontier. Whether you are a solo adventurer or a family looking to experience the wild side of Manitoba, McKenzie's provides the necessary infrastructure to enjoy the great outdoors comfortably.

We don't camp, but we stop by regularly in the summer. We sit and have a few smokes at one of the picnic tables.

Drove through the provincial park next door which was beautifully maintained to get to McKenzie's RV park, which was not well maintained. There had been lots of rain there, and the RV park was very muddy, the parking stalls had very little gravel for the trailer and are barely big enough to park a truck, never mind an RV. The grass hadn't been trimmed down in most places. Fire pit we had was full of old garbage and ash turned to clay from rain. The only wood available was green spruce full of spruce bugs, sawed into lengths but not split, and no kindling around so it was impossible to light a fire. The owner was away when we checked in and they had said their son would be there, but nobody was around. We weren't shown where to put the garbage or recycling. Found a recycling bin that was overflowing when we arrived and was not cleaned up at all during the four days we were there - good for attracting bears. Campsites are very close together. One good thing was the convenience of water and sewer hookup right at the campsite. Never did see or talk to an owner/operator. Wifi was advertised, but didn't work.

Just stopped here briefly on the way to Flin Flon from Winnipeg to take a short rest and stretch my legs, but the scenery was quite nice. :)

This campground and especially the park on the other site offer some stunning landscapes in an otherwise quite sleepy town.
