Overview
McLean Creek Provincial Recreation Area offers a rugged and scenic getaway nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. As a prominent year-round destination, this park serves as a primary hub for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the vast Kananaskis Country wilderness. It is particularly well-known for its expansive trail networks and heavily forested campsites that provide a deep sense of seclusion while remaining conveniently accessible from nearby urban centers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just a short drive west of the charming hamlet of Bragg Creek, AB, the park is beautifully positioned along the banks of the Elbow River. The surrounding landscape is defined by rolling foothills, dense lodgepole pine forests, and dramatic rocky outcrops. Because it is located adjacent to a Public Land Use Zone, the area feels significantly more wild and raw than standard campgrounds, offering a genuine mountain atmosphere for travelers.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features a mix of over 150 sites, offering power-only hookups alongside traditional unserviced options that can accommodate a range of RV sizes. While the facilities maintain a rustic charm, guests have access to several key features:
- Access to potable water cisterns and a sani-dump station.
- Individual sites equipped with heavy-duty fire pits.
- Dedicated space for off-highway vehicle staging and storage.
These amenities provide a comfortable base for those looking to experience the wilderness without sacrificing essential needs.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The most significant draw for visitors is the direct access to hundreds of kilometers of motorized OHV trails, making it a premier destination for off-roading. Beyond the engines, the area offers excellent fishing in the Elbow River and scenic strolls through Bragg Creek. The nearby mountains provide endless opportunities for world-class hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife photography, ensuring that every type of nature lover finds something to enjoy.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for travelers who prioritize rugged outdoor adventure over modern resort-style luxuries. It is a quintessential choice for RVers hauling ATVs or dirt bikes, as well as families seeking a traditional mountain camping trip. If you appreciate a self-sufficient camping style and want immediate access to expansive backcountry trails and river views, McLean Creek is an ideal Alberta destination.

Not a fan of the double sites in loops C&D. This is stupid - you either need to reserve both or be okay with strangers within an arms length which is weird when you go camping to get away from people. Otherwise the sites are nice. Big enough. Always clean.

This is our favourite campground. It is close to the city, saving a lot of time when you just have a weekend. Though we sometimes bring OHV with us, we like to stay in the non-OHS loops, especially B Loop. Huge treed sites with power, paved access to site, quiet and private.

Just spent the worst night I’ve ever had camping there. It used to be a nice family, friendly campground and they’re supposed to be rules set in place for noise restrictions but if there is no one who enforces the rules, it doesn’t really work. Last night people had a music festival, practically starting at 9:30 for two or three hours, cranking their music as loud as possible, and then following that ripping around on their off-road vehicles until around three in the morning. It’s supposed to be no noise after 9 PM and no loud music ever but where are the campground attendance to enforce it? Where is anyone to enforce it?

Our family booked this campground but we didn’t stay there as the owner was just terrible. We said we wouldn’t stay here if you paid us! The owners brother is a saint and took us to his campground in Inverness and he would not take money for our stay, he felt so bad for the way his brother treated us. A real class act! Won’t recommend for my friends to stay at McLean campgrounds.

I've camped here lots! I've always loved this campground. But the camp host sure was a buzzkill last night. There were four of us sitting around the fire with tunes playing. We were told at 7:15 that we were not allowed to play music that others could here. I asked if there was not quiet times, and he said no. We were told that loop A was a family loop and there was to be NO noise at anytime! That's absolutely ridiculous. We sure could hear other campsites playing their music, kids screaming, people laughing loudly, dogs barking. He said we should have booked in loop C or D, where you can play music etc and not get in trouble for it. Ah, where does this information show up when reserving online? A "family loop?" It doesn't! Also, it CLEARLY states that if you do not have an offroad vehicle, to NOT book in C or D loops. So really, should we have booked one there?
