Meade

Overview

Meade State Park offers a peaceful retreat in the southwestern corner of Kansas. Originally established as a wildlife refuge in the late 1920s, it provides a lush oasis within the vast shortgrass prairie. The park is centered around an 80-acre lake, which was originally created by a dam to provide a refreshing break for travelers navigating the high plains. It is a quiet destination where the sounds of nature and the prairie wind take center stage.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately eight miles south of the city of Meade, KS, this state park sits in a unique geographic depression. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills and native grasses, providing a stark but beautiful contrast to the irrigated farmland found in the region. Travelers will find a secluded atmosphere here, far from the noise of major interstates, making it an ideal spot for those seeking scenic solitude and a genuine High Plains experience.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several campgrounds with a mix of primitive and utility sites. Many sites offer utility hookups, catering well to modern RVers who need water and electricity. Facilities include a modern shower house, a dump station, and multiple shaded picnic areas for day use. For those interested in water activities, there is a convenient boat ramp and several fishing piers. The campsites are generally well-spaced, allowing for a sense of privacy under the canopy of mature cottonwood trees.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Recreation revolves around the lake, which is a popular spot for kayaking and angling. Local fishermen often find luck catching channel catfish, bluegill, and largemouth bass in the calm waters. On land, the nature trails offer excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and hiking, especially during the spring and fall migrations. A short drive into town leads to the historic Dalton Gang Hideout, where visitors can explore local history and a museum dedicated to legendary Kansas outlaws.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is a perfect match for nature enthusiasts and birders who appreciate the quiet rhythms of the prairie. It is ideal for families looking for a safe, relaxed environment for swimming at the beach or teaching kids to fish. Because of its remote location and calm vibe, it is best suited for RVers who enjoy a peaceful, rustic experience rather than those seeking the high-speed amenities or social activities of a luxury resort.

I went to this clinic for three years, and the only thing it was good for was to regill my diabetic meds. I have psoriasis, and desperately tried to get them to help me with it, all they would do was put me on methotrexate, an old and outdated treatment which pretty much poisons you. I asked about a referal to a dermatologist, but they said they had none, so i continued to poison myself for another year. I then had a situation where i was in severe pain, needed narcotics, had never asked for them before, and they refused to even see me for it. At which point i fired them from my care. Forward a couple months, i get established with new care at 15th St Family care center in Liberal, and two years later im still recieving care from them. They adjusted me to better diabetic meds, and refered me to dermatology in the hospital there, im now on Skyrisi, psoriasis is GONE. I cant believe i suffered through the inept care of Meade rural health clinic for so many years. They should be shut down. Their care is inadequate, inept, insufficient, and borders on downright criminal. Go the extra distance and go to Liberal to get your health care, you will be glad you did. Update, the care in Liberal ended up being lackluster in the long run. Unimpressed.

This review is for and about Dr. Bambi. I went in for Covid and my preference not to have medicine because of my beliefs started her to be rude. When I refused meds she had an attitude asking me why I am there. I work for Walmart where I am around people all day and was not going to get anyone else sick and I needed documentation for my work so I do not lose my job. Today she calls me because I still needed the documents and she had an attitude with me once again. I had to do a leave of absence for work so I do not lose my job for missing more than 3 days. This Dr. is in my top 5 of worst to deal with and have no respect for patient boundaries.

This women’s healthcare provider will cancel appointments over paperwork without even telling patients. Unethical and not a haven for women in rural areas unfortunately.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our family has been very pleased with the care and service they provide. I love that they are open on Saturday mornings for urgent care!
