Meadow Lake/Waterhen Lake South

Overview

Meadow Lake Provincial Park, specifically the Waterhen Lake South area, offers a quintessential northern Saskatchewan experience. Located near the village of Dorintosh, this destination is part of one of the province's largest and most diverse parks. Visitors are greeted by a lush boreal forest landscape that frames the crystal-clear waters of Waterhen Lake. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in the quiet rhythms of the Canadian wilderness while enjoying reliable infrastructure.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated on the southern shore of Waterhen Lake, tucked away from the more crowded tourist hubs within the park system. The surroundings are characterized by dense stands of aspen and spruce, providing a natural privacy screen between sites. The lake itself is known for its expansive sandy shoreline, which makes it a standout feature in the region. Dorintosh provides a convenient gateway for supplies, ensuring you are never too far from essentials while feeling completely secluded.

Amenities & Park Features

Waterhen Lake South is well-equipped for modern RV travelers. The park features a variety of electric-equipped campsites that can accommodate different rig sizes. Essential services include potable water stations, clean washroom facilities, and a dedicated fish cleaning station for successful anglers. For recreation, the park provides a playground for children and a well-maintained boat launch, making it easy to transition from the campsite to the water in minutes.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the exceptional walleye and northern pike fishing, which is considered some of the best in the area. Hikers can access portions of the Boreal Trail, a massive trekking system that winds through the provincial park’s diverse ecosystems. Water activities like kayaking and paddleboarding are popular due to the lake's sheltered bays. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep their eyes peeled for bald eagles and white-tailed deer frequenting the forest edges.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for serious anglers and families who prefer a more tranquil, nature-focused camping experience. It appeals to RVers who value scenic solitude over high-energy resort amenities. If your travel style involves quiet mornings by the water and evenings spent around a campfire in a deep forest setting, Waterhen Lake South provides the perfect backdrop for your Saskatchewan road trip.
