Medicine Bow-Routt/Brooklyn Lake

Overview

Brooklyn Lake Campground offers a high-altitude escape within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 10,500 feet, this rustic destination provides a serene mountain backdrop for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature. It is a primitive camping experience where the sounds of the wind through the subalpine fir and spruce trees take center stage, offering a true mountain wilderness atmosphere for those visiting the Centennial area.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of Centennial, WY, the park sits at the base of the majestic Snowy Range Peaks. The environment is characterized by crystal-clear alpine lakes and rugged granite cliffs. Because of its extreme height, the air remains cool even in mid-summer, making it a perfect retreat from the heat. The surrounding forest is home to diverse wildlife, including moose and marmots, which are often spotted near the water's edge at dawn and dusk.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, the focus here is on simplicity rather than modern luxury. The park features essential facilities designed for self-contained travelers who enjoy a more traditional camping style. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. Key amenities include:

  • Vault toilets maintained for cleanliness and convenience.
  • Potable water accessible via a seasonal hand pump.
  • Gravel parking spurs designed for smaller trailers and camper vans.

There are no hookups or dump stations, so RVers must arrive prepared for dry camping. The sites are well-spaced among the trees to provide a sense of privacy and isolation from the outside world.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore with the Sheep Lake Trail and Glacier Lakes Trail located nearby. These paths offer breathtaking views of the Medicine Bow Peak and are popular for summer hiking and wildflower viewing. The area is also known for:

  • Alpine fishing for brook trout in the surrounding lakes.
  • Non-motorized boating, such as kayaking or canoeing, on the calm waters of Brooklyn Lake.
  • Driving the Snowy Range Scenic Byway for incredible panoramas and photo opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for the boondocking enthusiast who values solitude and scenery over resort-style amenities. If you travel in a smaller rig and enjoy high-altitude exploration, this is a prime location. It is best for those looking to unplug from the digital world and experience the raw beauty of Wyoming's wilderness during the short but spectacular summer season between July and September.

If you can get a site, You’re in for a real treat! It’s beautiful! The campground hosts were friendly and helpful. Campground is clean and actually does have some first come first serve sites. Road to the campground is bad, so drive slow! The trail at the campground was rocky but very nice due to gradual rise to the lakes. Absolutely beautiful!

Great Campground. Not a ton of privacy, but beautiful setting and great location for hiking, hunting, fishing. A ways off the paved road so quite private. Bathrooms were clean. Our 18' trailer would have fit in any of the sites by the look of it.

Stayed before July 4th weekend so First Come First Served was in effect. Only 2/3 of the sites available due to remaining snow drifts. Day time was really warm and yet evenings cooled to the 50’s. Mosquitoes were thick and mild winds did little to deter them. Very nice location down 5 miles of gravel road. One family of about 7 along with their large trailer camped there and found a spot to fit into. Unfortunately they ran their damn generator from 6:30am through mid-afternoon. Truly annoying and it chased a few out of the campground as a result. Saw two moose near the lake one evening (out of three).

Awesome campground 😀! The hosts were friendly. They have clean restrooms and we were lucky to have a good spot. You just have to walk few minutes for the lake . The campsites were well maintained . We forgot to buy some firewoods but picking firewoods was allowed so we just had to pick some . I also like that they have the pump where you could get water for cooking and all. It was also a good spot for stargazing 🤩 Reccommend ! 😃

Beautiful views! Clean pit toilets. Snow just left the grounds in July ( and its a lake) so take plenty of mosquito repellent for you and your surroundings.
