Medicine Bow-Routt/Nash Fork
Overview
Nestled deep within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, Nash Fork Campground offers a tranquil, high-elevation escape for RVers who prefer primitive camping over modern resort luxuries. Located just west of the small town of Centennial, this Forest Service site serves as a gateway to the stunning Snowy Range. At approximately 10,000 feet above sea level, the air is crisp and the scenery is dominated by towering Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir trees, providing a rugged mountain atmosphere that feels worlds away from the city.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated along the iconic Snowy Range Scenic Byway, one of the most breathtaking drives in Wyoming. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Medicine Bow Mountains, the campground sits adjacent to the babbling waters of Nash Fork Creek. This area is characterized by dramatic quartzite cliffs and alpine meadows that burst into wildflower color during the short summer season. Visitors should prepare for rapid weather changes due to the high altitude, even during the peak of July and August.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service destination, the amenities at Nash Fork are focused on basic necessities. This is a dry camping facility, so travelers should plan accordingly for their power and water needs. Park features include:
- Vault toilets and seasonal trash collection services
- Individual picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings
- Potable water accessible via manual hand pumps
The lack of reliable cell service ensures a true off-grid experience for those looking to unplug. RVers should note that the campground has a limited operating season due to snow, typically opening in late June and closing by early October.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for anyone staying in this region. A short drive further up the byway leads to Mirror Lake and Lake Marie, where travelers can enjoy photography, light paddling, or easy lakeside strolls. For more adventurous visitors, the Medicine Bow Peak Trail offers a challenging hike to the highest point in the range. Fishing enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities in the nearby creeks and alpine lakes, while wildlife watchers often spot moose and marmots in the surrounding meadows.
Who This Park Is Best For
Nash Fork is ideal for boondocking enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers who prioritize location and scenery above all else. It is a perfect fit for travelers with smaller rigs or high-clearance camper vans looking for a quiet home base to explore the Snowy Range. Because of the limited site dimensions and primitive nature, it is less suited for those with large luxury fifth wheels or those requiring constant internet connectivity. It is a haven for those who love mountain solitude and cool summer temperatures.

Best of the three high elevation campgrounds! Sugar Loaf and Brooklyn Lake are picturesque, but, you’re shoulder to shoulder with neighbors. No so at Nash Fork! Frankly, one of the nicest renovated with great tent pads and plenty of room between campsites comparatively! We had booked a campsite for 8 days at a lower elevation but abandoned it for one of the First Come, First Serve that was open at Nash Fork. No regrets!

The photos on Recreation.gov don't do this campground justice. It's beautiful. The only thing to be mindful of, it doesn't have water on site. I was here early August. It's about 4 miles from Sugarloaf and Medicine Bow Peak trails, and countless others.

Wonderful first-come, first-served camp sites in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. Recent campground improvements include wonderful level tent pads and roomy drive in spots for campers and another vehicle Be bear-aware and follow park information for stowing food, etc. Also be MOOSE aware, and keep a HEALTHY distance between you and any moose you have the privilege of seeing! We were blessed with MANY sightings during our brief stay. ALL campgrounds in the area fill quickly and nearly all have no cell service. If you don't have a rewervation/ are meeting others, pre-arrange an alternate time and place to meet or connect at the camp entrance sign. There are some dispersed forest service camping opportunities nearby - it is a good idea to have a back up plan! Several campers had dogs with them.

After striking out from two other full campgrounds I settled on this one. Entire lot is first come first serve only and there were a handful of sites available. $10 a day to rent a site. Like others said you will get some highway noise but the Campground itself is dispersed and you are not on top of each other.
