Medicine Bow-Routt/North Fork

Overview

North Fork Campground offers a peaceful retreat within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. Located near the scenic town of Centennial, Wyoming, this destination provides a classic mountain camping experience. At an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet, visitors can enjoy cool summer temperatures and the soothing sounds of the North Fork of the Little Laramie River. It serves as an excellent base for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the high-country wilderness of the Snowy Range.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated along the Snowy Range Scenic Byway, one of the most picturesque drives in the region. Surrounded by dense stands of lodgepole pine and Engelmann spruce, the setting is quintessentially alpine. The proximity to the river makes it a prime spot for water-based relaxation. Travelers will find themselves nestled in a rugged landscape characterized by dramatic granite peaks and sprawling meadows that burst with wildflowers during the short summer season.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, the amenities focus on preserving the natural environment rather than providing commercial luxuries. The park offers the following essential features:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal drinking water are available for guest use.
  • Individual sites equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a steel fire ring.
  • Direct access to the Little Laramie River for bank fishing.

While it accommodates many RV sizes, those with smaller to medium-sized rigs will find the navigation through the forested loops easiest. It is a dry camping destination where the primary draw is the pristine, quiet atmosphere of the forest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the easy access to the Snowy Range Hiking Trails, which range from gentle meadow walks to challenging summit climbs like Medicine Bow Peak. Anglers often find success fishing for trout in the nearby river or high-altitude alpine lakes. Just a short drive away, the town of Centennial offers a glimpse into Wyoming’s history with local eateries and shops. The Mirror Lake and Lake Marie overlooks are essential stops for photographers seeking stunning reflections of the snowy mountain peaks.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prefer solitude and natural beauty over modern resort luxuries. It is a perfect fit for nature photographers, hikers, and those seeking a cool escape from the summer heat. If you enjoy off-grid camping and waking up to the sound of a rushing river rather than highway traffic, this high-elevation gem provides the authentic Wyoming wilderness experience you are looking for.

Best of the three high elevation campgrounds! Sugar Loaf and Brooklyn Lake are picturesque, but, you’re shoulder to shoulder with neighbors. No so at Nash Fork! Frankly, one of the nicest renovated with great tent pads and plenty of room between campsites comparatively! We had booked a campsite for 8 days at a lower elevation but abandoned it for one of the First Come, First Serve that was open at Nash Fork. No regrets!

The photos on Recreation.gov don't do this campground justice. It's beautiful. The only thing to be mindful of, it doesn't have water on site. I was here early August. It's about 4 miles from Sugarloaf and Medicine Bow Peak trails, and countless others.

Wonderful first-come, first-served camp sites in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. Recent campground improvements include wonderful level tent pads and roomy drive in spots for campers and another vehicle Be bear-aware and follow park information for stowing food, etc. Also be MOOSE aware, and keep a HEALTHY distance between you and any moose you have the privilege of seeing! We were blessed with MANY sightings during our brief stay. ALL campgrounds in the area fill quickly and nearly all have no cell service. If you don't have a rewervation/ are meeting others, pre-arrange an alternate time and place to meet or connect at the camp entrance sign. There are some dispersed forest service camping opportunities nearby - it is a good idea to have a back up plan! Several campers had dogs with them.

After striking out from two other full campgrounds I settled on this one. Entire lot is first come first serve only and there were a handful of sites available. $10 a day to rent a site. Like others said you will get some highway noise but the Campground itself is dispersed and you are not on top of each other.
